iPad Review via a Pro Photography Perspective

My take on the iPad just went up on my blog today. I have been a commercial photographer for over twenty years and gone through many portfolio formats. I think this has a ton of promotional potential. I have learned so much from this forum since joining...would love to hear any feedback, especially from other photographers.

I am an upcoming freelance photographer in Dubai and in the process of building my portfolio and then incorporating the ipad into my workflow!

its good to learn about your thought process in making your ipad an effective component of your work!

one app that i found useful in reference to your post regarding sending a couple of images as a pdf portfolio was strip design. yes, its a roundabout way but you can select a single pane sheet and add an image to it or select other layouts, add images and then after a couple of sheets export as pdf and email away!
 
I'm a relative noob at 12 years in the business. However i can see the huge potential to some photographers. If i was still doing weddings then i'd expect it to have a big impact on my sales pitch.

Downside is, with my current focus on landscape photograpy, its not something you sell face-to-face, so it cant help me much. Remote desktopping to do a bit of Photoshop work is pretty cool though, if not quite ideal.

Maybe an iPad Pro when AppleT&T quits making computers. :D

A digital portfolio is one of my main reasons for (originally) wanting an iPad.

But unlike any other photo frame! I don't understand why people call it a photo frame, even a tv setup to show pictures all the time is called a tv! And not 'the biggest digital photo frame'

Even for landscape photography it could be useful for tethered shooting if an DSLR remote like app is developed. Or it can be used on field for checking critical sharpness etc.
 
Cuechick, I totally agree with you. The way it shows photos is like nothing else on the market I TOO am a photographer, albeit an amateur one but I can just picture sitting round a table, handing over the iPad and let them flick through a set of images at their own pace. To do the same on a laptop or netbook is clunky, awkward at best. Not to mention the IPS screen on the iPad makes images come alive.

I guess that depends on your perspective. My last custom portfolios cost over $3000,so the iPad is a bargain IMO!
 
It's an awesome screen and would be great for (small) presentations, now we just need a way to calibrate the screen. It doesn't look bad by default, but it's definitely not calibrated. I wonder if there's a way to use the 30-pin connector or USB camera kit to attach a calibrator such as the Datacolor Spyder3. Of course they'd have to write an app for it, but that would be really cool.
 
I can also see it being used on set for tethered shooting. Don't know if that is possible yet.... But some day :)

Since you can use iPad as a live monitor and storage for pix from the iphone via bluetooth, I'm sure we will see other bluetooth cams working with it. I guess these exist?

You can definitely tether the iPad while shooting. I was working with a fashion photographer in NY last week at Pier 59 studios, and his crew had integrated the iPad with Capture One Pro so that every shot he took on set automatically displayed to the iPad. I'm not sure what program they used but I can ask his digital tech for the name. It was definitely helpful as an art director to be able to view the shots without the added display being in the way on set. :)

Awesome post! Thank you!!! I'm still learning workflow using it and finding little issues uploading from my 5D Mark II but it's a game changer....
 
Cool blog, glad its working out.

I'm a pro photographer too, except I shoot mostly fashion editorial.

The iPad has been an absolute gem for displaying my work and everyone that I've shown it to has literally took the time to go through ALL of my galleries, not sure they even bother doing that with my website LOL.
 
I'm more the artsy-farsty photographer, and for my PAD (Picture-A-Day) Project the iPad had been a great way to do my daily updates and show my project to others while on-the-go. I've also been geotagging my photos and I absolutely love the Places feature to see where I've been.
I'm an Art Director by trade, and I can certainly tell you, I'd be happy to review a photographers work on an iPad. And with the iBooks update that will let you display PDFs, the possibilities for some really nice custom portfolios is endless.

It is encouraging to know you'd be open to looking at a book this way. More and more I think it could become a primary book. What do you think about photogs dropping off an entire iPad? Would you want to take responsibility for it? Would you be concerned about it be breakage or theft? I had books lost twice in my carreer, both by magazines. They both paid me to replace the lost books as it was due to their own negligence... both were far more expensive than an iPad.

I use to shoot mostly fashion when I lived in NYC but since moving South I have have had more diverse opps. Still shoot lots of fashion, surprisingly enough.

Are you on computer or your iPad...? If it's the later, it does work better if you make the page bigger. It is fine on a computer screen.mi usually make it smaller actually.
