So I left my bag under a seat with my iPad in it and when I came back 1/5 of the screen was cracked. The iPad might have gone through some pressure, but I'm not 100% sure how it happened.

My question is has anyone had a cracked screen before? and if so, what were the costs of getting it repaired at the Apple store.

Thanks for your help and sorry for the horrible picture.

If the glass isn't cracked, bring in into apple and tell them that it did it by itself and you don't know why nor are you happy about it. No proof of foul play and it could save you tons of $$. They should exchange in a snap.

Yeah, I think that is what I'll do tomorrow. The glass isn't cracked and I am still able to interact with that part of the screen (type and scroll). Hopefully, they don't charge me too much or anything at all.

Sure, right. Lie, cheat, steal, it's all ok.

Here's to karma.

You'd think this is one instance where Apple's insistance on buying with plastic could actually help the consumer. Most credit cards offer 90 day accident protection if the purchase was bought completely on one card.

Get off the high-horse. Frankly if the LCD has failed yet the glass is not cracked, it was not subjected to significant abuse. It sounds like a manufacturing defect and Apple should take responsibility.

Hopefully the OP will explain the situation a little better than above and honesty is always the best way to go. The OP did say "the screen was cracked". A cracked screen in my opinion would mean the iPad was subjected to some sort of "significant abuse".

The OP says it was in a bag under a seat? What seat? A car seat? Did pressure from sitting in the car seat crack the glass? Was it a seat in a classroom? Did the person behind you kick it or step on it? Did anyone have access to the iPad while it was under the seat? What else was in the bag? The devil is in the details. Glass generally tends not to spontaneously crack. ;)

From what I can tell from the photo the crack appears to be all the way across the left 1/5th of the screen. That would suggest some sort of excessive pressure on the screen at that position.

I predict Apple will claim physical abuse (doesn't matter if you don't know how the physical abuse occurred) and not replace it under warranty.

If the iPad was bought with a credit card the recommendation to check with the credit card company to see if they have 90 day accident protection for items purchased with their card is your best bet in my opinion.

Do come back and let us know how things go.

Okay, well here is an update.

To answer your questions and to clarify my story, I left my iPad inside my duffle bag along with a pair of shorts, t-shirt and belt while I was playing baseball with a couple of friends. I left it under the bench in a dugout and to my knowledge, no one touched my bag.

Anyways, I went to the Genius bar today and before I even began to tell my story, the employee told me that although Apple doesn't cover these types of damages, he'd replace my iPad for free. Within 15 minutes, I left the store with a brand new iPad.

Congratulations on your replacement iPad. I honestly did not think Apple would replace an iPad (or any other item for that matter) with physical damage to it.

Boo-hoo. I was waiting for a little sour puss like you to come along and spout your morals to everyone. He obviously had no clue how it happened, and it wasn't in use when it broke. What's the harm in taking advantage of a situation like that? Unless you have money pouring out your ass then anybody would. Plus, looked like it was perfectly within the lines according to the apple genius. When I'm spending large sums of money on a company every year the least the could do is replace something that cost them chump change. Gotta love apples customer service:apple:

It did it by itself, sure.... I'd love to see the faces of the Apple Geniuses who have to sit and listen to obvious ******** from lying customers.

Apple should take responsibility. LOL. No, I mean seriously, this made me laugh out loud.

Why shouldn't he spout his/her morals off to everyone? Everyone else spouted theirs off when they said it was okay to lie.

Wrong. Just because an Apple Genius decided to take pity on this guy doesn't necessarily mean it was "perfectly within the lines".

When I'm spending large sums of money on a company every year the least the could do is replace something that cost them chump change.

Potentially, some of the worst reasoning I've read yet on this forum. "I spend lots of money so when I break my stuff you should give me some for free." Get a grip.

Gotta love apples customer service:apple:

On this point we agree.

OP, lucky you that they replaced it for you. One more reason to support Apple.

Congrats OP on the replacement, I started a thread last week because of a similar (very similar) situation and Apple is refusing to fix my iPad, they told me that I caused the damage and they will gladly replace it at a $299 fee.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/957628/, here is my thread with photos showing almost the same screen problem.

potentially the worst reading comprehension I've seen. I didn't say "oh I broke my **** replace it cause it was so expensive." Had the glass been broken, sure, it was the op's fault. But it wasn't, and it seems more than obvious his screen shouldn't have been distorted like that, especially while being left unused in a bag.

Agreed, that's utterly rediculous. I would raise hell explaining there's no way anything you did would have caused the battery to do that, especially under the terms you stated.

I skimmed through a page or two of your thread and I definitely feel your pain. The Apple store that I usually go to has been doing great things for me and that is one of the reasons I am such a huge Apple supporter.

The Genius employee told me that the damage to my iPad usually isn't covered in the warrantee but he'd help me out.

When my MacBook battery died after my warrantee expired, they also replaced the battery for free (I'm not sure if this is common or not).

If you have problems with your Apple products, I suggest trying visiting genius bars at several different locations if they aren't too far away. I'm sure some genius bars are more sympathetic than others.

Just wanted to post a similar experience I had today. The Apple Store in Escondido (San Diego area) was able to take care of me no problem. My iPad looked identical to what the OP had posted. Neither the touchscreen nor the LCD screen was cracked, but there was definitely some display issue going on. Took about 15-20 minutes from start to finish. The girl helping me looked over the entire device along with me for a few minutes and said "Ok, let's get you a new iPad". Restoring the iPad now :)

Jaykkub: lol I returned an iPad I got on launch day last week due to a strange LCD problem to the same Escondido apple store. Out the door in 15 min with a new iPad. No damage to my other one just a chunk of dead pixels across the screen one morning.
