Good Morning,

I’m having an issue with my iPad Pro where I get 4 horizontal lines flickering on the screen. My first thought is LCD damage, but there’s been no drops or damage whatsoever. I just updated the iPad overnight and I’m wondering if it’s a software issue.

The screen only flickers when idle. If I’m typing or swiping the flickering stops, but as soon as I’m not touching the iPad it resumes again. This leads me to think it’s software based.

Any ideas? Second video is easier to see

I cannot see the flickering (even with high brightness).

I tried to take another video with a grey background that hopefully shows it off better. It’s hard to capture on camera. You can see when I move the screen the flickering stops, it’s only when it’s still you’ll see horizontal flickering

I woke up to the exact same thing today - also after a software update. It stopped after a few hours by itself. I definitely didn't drop it or get it wet or anything. It was plugged in on my desk overnight, and had no problems yesterday. Im just really hoping it doesn't come back as I cant afford to replace it right now. I have already replaced my phone when the SE came out as my battery was awful, so thats pretty much my tech budget for the year. So fingers crossed as I found it pretty much unusable while the lines were flickering - made me feel quite ill.

I’m relieved to hear I’m not the only one! Mine seems to have gotten a little fainter but it’s still there. Did yours go away entirely?

Yes, it seems to have gone completely. It was there again this morning after being charged, but disappeared within a few minutes. I do have an older ipad pro model, so maybe its something to do with that, but its a bit suspicious that it happened right after a software update. Im quite careful with it and its definitely never been dropped or sat on etc.

This is on a 10.5 WiFi 256GB - wonder if you have the same? It seems to be completely gone for me as well today. The inconsistency makes me feel better about it being something software related. The iPad is less than 3 years old, so while it’s not “current” it’s definitely not old. I thought I was going to have to buy a new everything - credit card was braced for impact!

Yes, I have a 10.5 256gb too. I can’t remember exactly how old it is, but probably 2016/2017. Back when they still did the rose gold colour, large bezels. The issue hasn’t reappeared again, so hopefully it keeps going for another while ? I really thought it’s time was up and I would be without an ipad for a while. It’s gotten a lot of use through lockdown so I’d hate to see it go down now!

I recently updated my iPad pro 256GB to 13.6.1 and began encountering the flickering issue as well. It is very annoying and noticeable in applications that have a neutral background. I'm guessing this is a software issue because it does not flicker when the screen is engaged with the pencil or drawing with your finger. I've attached a video that displays the problem (for those who could not see any flicker). My issue has not gone away. Could it be Apple did something with power consumption and the LEDs are not getting enough power when idle but ramp up when not idle?

Did anyone here get this resolved? This exact same flickering just appeared on my 10.5” 256 GB iPad Pro (bought in November 2017 I believe). I had it plugged in overnight. This morning it had the “must enter password after restart” prompt so I think it updated overnight. I noticed it shortly afterward on a website with a dark grey background.

I’ve got a 10.5 256 gb with the same thing. The problem comes and goes, so it’s definitely a software issue. It’s usually barely noticeable for me so I don’t mind too much, but it’s interesting that others have had the same thing.

edit: I’m on 13.6.1 and there’s no flickering right now, though it was a few weeks ago. Will give an update after getting 13.7.

It does seem much less noticeable when lighter tones dominate. Varying viewing angles and other conditions make it less apparent at times. I guess I can take solace in that it appears to be a software issue and not an indication of imminent screen failure. Still frustrating though. Is your iPad updated all the way to 13.7?

I can’t really see the flickering anymore - it might not be there at all right now. So I guess it probably will come and go like you said, unless one of the updates actually fixes it. Thanks for the help! I was sure I would need to replace the screen when this first showed up which was pretty upsetting considering the iPad is only 3 years old.

I have a same problem on my iPad Pro 10.5" 256GB (MPDY2FD/A)
4 vertical flickering lines, they disappear on touch.:( Hard Reset and updating to OS 14 did nothing.
It drives me crazy, especially during night time, when lines are more visible than in daylight.

I’m having the same issue! Exactly the same. My iPad is 10.5 Wi-Fi Pro 256GB 2017. It died so I let it charge overnight. Upon start up I had to enter my password again as if there had been an update. After that, I noticed the issue - a couple of flickering lines running across my screen. All are white-ish, but still noticeable. They only appear when the screen is resting. When engaged, by typing or whatever, the lines disappear, so it does seem like a software issue to me. I definitely haven’t dropped the thing, nor have I handled it roughly.

After seeing what was going on, I updated to 14.0.1, but that had no effect, the lines are still there. This seems like a running issue with this particular model of the iPad. For some, it disappears after a couple of days, for some it seems to persist. I’m also wondering, whether it has something to do with the device being plugged in overnight. Most of us have left the device to charge overnight, and on the next day started to experience the problem. Perhaps it is related to that in some way; the battery overcharging, or making some changes to the way the screen is powered or something like that. I guess I’ll try to drain the battery and see if it goes away... but for now it remains frustrating.

It seems to happen for me everytime I get an update, then resolves on its own. More concerning though - now it seems to wake up with a dark screen after it updates too - really dim like the backlight isnt working. Once I restart it its fine again....with some flickers...then eventually fine.

The flickering still occurs with mine, but only after it has been shut off. It disappears after a little while - not sure how long. At this point I just ignore it.
If your issue is that pink screen that seems like something entirely different.

i have a iPad Pro 12.9 2017. My journey with this Apple product has been extremely bad. I brought a brand new set from the store and within a few weeks, lines started appearing. Went back to the store and they did a one-one exchange. The next set is probably a refurbished unit and was alright for a while. Then after one of the OS updates after around 15 months of usage, flickering and lines started appearing Randomly. Initially it wasn’t very frequent, then it progresses to be almost constant and is not usable at all. the ipad was never dropped or damaged and was always protected. I brought it back to apple and they told me that since my warranty is over, they can‘t replace it without cost. This was disappointing as my last ipad lasted 8 years before it died, and this is less than 2 years and the experience at the apple store was terrible. The senior genius there seem to suggest I was at fault. Subsequently i brought another ipad to replace but still kept this faulty unit in hopes that i might someday recover. After seating in my cabinet for more than 2 years and only taken out during every major iPadOS update, the screen always seems ok after prolonged powered off But the lines will reappear the next day or so. I was convinced it would more likely be a hardware problem and almost decided to gave up. Then iPadOS 15 happens, as usual i brought it out from cold storage and updated it expecting it to go back to its lines and flicker the next day …. BUT i am now probably 2 weeks on and running every **** i can put on it, while the performance seems slower than before, but the flickering and lines did not appear any more. This brings the question … was there a design issue with iPad Pro 12.9 2017? which have deprived me 2 years of usage and buying iPads to replace it. I am happily typing on it right now, something i never thought can happen.
For those who encountered similar problems and still have your ipad somewhere it might be worth taking it out, update and see if it fixes your problem.

For now while there are tons of bugs in iOS 15, i am never going to update it, for fear that it will break my device again.
