My two theories:

iPad 3G will ship on Tuesday or Wednesday and we will all get a shipped email at the same time (during the night) and the shipment status on the site will never say "preparing for shipment"; just switch from "not yet shipped" to "shipped fedex tracking number XXXXXX".

OR

iPad 3G will ship on Tuesday or Wednesday and the site will only update to Prepared for Shipment when it does ACTUALLY ship. On Thursday, we will all get an email at the same time (along with the status changing) and when we track it, we will see that it has already arrived in the Memphis Intl FedEx Hub and waiting to be overnighted for a Friday delivery.

"ONE MORE THING" - Steve Jobs

FedEx will have sooo many orders of the iPad 3G, many orders will not be delivered until Saturday or Monday because of "Weather Conditions" (this is a common excuse for FedEx if they are running behind. - I have had many orders have this "exception" and Memphis was 79 degress and partly cloudy.
BAD NEWS - Memphis's weather is forecasted as:
Apr 29 Thursday
More sun than clouds. Highs in the low 80s and lows in the low 60s.
Apr 30 Friday
Isolated thunderstorms. Highs in the low 80s and lows in the mid 60s.

FedEx will have the opportunity for excuse. This is out of Apple's control once FedEx gets ahold of your iPad!

fed ex and ups don't even notice volume to this degree. they're huge global operations that ship countless millions of items a day. the 3G will be a blip to them.

of course if mine is delayed I will cry :(

or

they don't ship to Memphis at all and go via Alaska & California

They will ship this to Memphis because it is coming from China. I am just trying to provide everyone with my experience so nobody gets let down if they don't have it by the weekend. FedEx will notice a difference as a previous thread mentioned that FedEx is telling their employees about the new-coming large volume of shipments for expected delivery of Friday.

Don't they usually ship from China to Alaska? Why would they go through Memphis?

looks like i will have to wait aww but its wort it

Well it says "Ships: By May 7th". This means it could happen before, but if they go by this statement, you wont actually get it until after the 7th because it says ships not delivers by the 7th...

Further proof - others that ordered WiFi version are already stuck in Memphis! https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/903975/

FWIW- I live in east Tennessee, and my iPad went from Hong Kong, to Anchorage, to Indianapolis, and from there to Knoxville and then to me. So all orders don't go through Memphis.

Oh, maybe they randomly go to other hubs if they leave at different times but I know that the majority of people's order go through Memphis.

Here we go again......

The week before the wifi models generated thousands of posts.....

"mine shipped, did yours"
"I don't have a tracking number"
"my tracking number still shows prepared for shipment"
"my iPad is stuck in customs"
"my iPad is stuck in Hong Kong or Alaska or China (take your pick)"
"there is a storm and my iPad won't make it on time"

I waited for my wifi iPad to arrive, my shipping information (tracking) was never correct, in fact it delivered before it said "out for delivery" and only showed it had left China.

Now I am waiting again for my 3G iPad and I am certain it will arrive on time and there will be thousands of new posts with all the same topics......

Good lord, stop the trolling

If you preordered before the cutoff and got the email you will be receiving the ipad3G on Friday. All others: who knows.

not to burst your bubble but the items Apple has shipped me from China (dock & cover) have gone via Alaska and not to Memphis at all.

I would have to disagree with you too. I live in Nashville, TN. All of my accessories:case, vga cable, camera connection kit, and dock were shipped via fedex - they were all shipped separately, and all took the following route:

Shenzhen, China
Lantau Island, Hong Kong
Anchorage, Alaska
Indianapolis, Indiana
Nashville, TN

I highly doubt FedEx will be able to deliver all iPads between 5pm and the end of their shift.

Er, has it ever been remotely stated or implied that deliveries won't start until 5?
