iPad simplicity

I'm pretty much obsessed with simplicity. Lately I've been thinking about how the iPad could simplify my life a little more. The not so thought out vision goes a little like this...

I could use the iPad as my primary access to the internet as this is basically all I use my computer for. With a little bit of music and emailing. I could do away with the laptop for the iPad and access the internet thru 3G so there is no need for an ISP, modem or phone line. iPhone takes care of incoming/outgoing calls.

Apart from becoming a monk I think this simplifies my life a little more. Anyone else think this could work? I'm going to give it a try.

I'm still far more "productive" on any laptop, whether it's my MBP or a Windows netbook. I've tried my BT keyboard paired with the iPad, but overall it's a little awkward to use.

I suppose if you want your life to be simpler and more frustrating, you could potentially just use the iPad.

It is simpler because you are really not dealing with the hassles of a normal operating system.

i think i'll be pairing it up with an android or Windows 7 mobile for all file management stuff. its a perfect ecosystem

I finally feel that I can be (computer-wise) where I envisioned it 15 years ago.


A desktop 'HQ' with an interactive walkabout screen with a bunch of functionality.


The Windows 7 Pro machine and the iPad fits perfect. The iPhone was just too small in the end.

I'm also into simplicity and minimalism and love the iPad because it does simplify my computing experience. It's so small and light that its perfect for using around the house and not having to worry about cords and bulk. I still have a MacBook and mac mini, but am thinking of getting rid of the MacBook and just having a base Mac mini and my iPad.

Apple has always been into simplicity and the iPad is definitely an extension of that.

It has replaced my laptop for the past 2 weeks (which was an easy choice the logic board on my MBP went out) but I don't think im going to get it fixed, the iPad does most of what my laptop did and for more productive work I am at my desktop anyway. Love it so far!

Great! I also understand this is not possible for everyone. Desktops and laptops have many advantages and are essential in certain situations but for some I think it's possible to be content with just an iPad.

This is the dream scenario: the iPad gets more and more functional through generations. People start relying less on traditional internet services requiring a phone line, a internet plan, modem and wireless router and connect instantly by 3G. Once 4G goes big I think a lot of people will be making this switch.

From: phone line, internet service provider, modem, router, computer or laptop.
To: 3G, iPad.

Maybe I'm an idealist but I think a lot of people could make this work for them.

I love my iPad but it still can't replace my MBP. I download a lot of pictures and videos because of my kids. They I create DVDs to send to my dad. Until the iPad can do multimedia like a laptop I'm still keeping mine.

The iPad makes a great companion to a laptop for quick searches, showing picture galleries and checking email, etc. I like my iPad so much I just ordered an unlocked Mifi 2372 so I can have Internet access on my iPad where ever I go. This little unit will work with my MBP and more!

There are certainly some apps that have simplified my life such as Air Video and Netflix. Watching videos on the go is awesome! Plus I'm back to reading books and magazines thanks to iBook and Kindle for the iPad.

Everything else is just fluff.

There is a lot to be said for its simplicity. I personally cannot let my laptop go, since I'm in school and write a lot of papers and do more stuff that requires multiple open windows and a full-fledged OS. If you only use your laptop for some web surfing, videos, and email, man, you really can't beat the iPad.
