Does anyone know if the ipad's speaker is decent quality.

Could it be used as a portable music player - ie not just with earphones

earth, for now.
To stem off of the original question...

With the Sound Quality be similar to that of the iPod Touch? Or will it be better... louder.. clearer... richer sounds?

We have no reviews of it yet, but it will surely be louder than the touch and the iPhone. There are three speaker grills on the bottom (the mic was moved to the top near the headphone jack), so the speaker is probably larger than in the other devices.

Hopefully it is louder than the Macbook Air which also has a Mono speaker.

You do realize that the iPad isn't out yet so we cannot really ascertain the speaker quality. Why not ask this question once apple starts selling the iPad.

I was slightly surprised that the ipad hasn't two speakers for some stereo effect and greater overall output/coverage. Not a big deal but just odd when audio is a fair part of the device.

Still, no doubt that the speaker on the ipad will be better than the iphone.

You do realize that reporters & such have had hands on experiences, right? Just check the usual trade mags and even youtube. I would think a few comments about audio quality should be floating out there somewhere.

I'm sure there will be a whole slew of iPad dock/speaker combo's available from third parties shortly after launch much like the usual iPhone/iPod speaker docks around today.

Same here I see no reason why they did not put two speaker on the ipad stereo would have been great.

You do realize that those reporters and such were in a large noisy hall while testing the device, right? So there would have been no real way for them to gauge the audio quality of the iPad.

I hope they build subwoofers into it, like they do the MacBook Pros. Still the only computer manufacturer I know to do that.

You will get to purchase the iBose surround sound system for $299 that attaches to the 30pin port :p

Seriously though I don't see anything being much different that the iPhone, maybe two of them but hardly a stereo experience. hell even my 27" iMac with plenty of room has rather crappy speakers.

I suspect it will be no better than the iPhone/iPod touch. I'd say bag yourself some decent earphones (I recommend Etymotics) though there will no doubt be iPad-compatible speaker docks.

It only has one speaker output, so won't be stereo quality unless it's doing something very clever..

I could have sworn the tech specs (http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/) said the other day "Built-in speakers". But today, it says "Built-in speaker". HMMMM. Of course, I could be crazy

I'm almost certain that I read an article by someone who used it at the press conference and said that it has a speaker on the top edge and the bottom edge (with bottom describing where the home button is), so that you had left and right stereo sound when holding in a landscape position (as you would probably do for movie watching).

Odd that they list "speaker" now tho! And the pics don't show a speaker on the top either, just a mic hole. It would be a conspicuous omission for such a media-centric device imo!

Asus and alienware were doing that years ago. I'm sure the sell xps had one too when first released.

I'd suspect it will be on par with normal laptop speakers. Good enough to hear what I'm listening to in a quiet environment, but certainly not audiophile quality. If it were like my iPhone 3GS in quality only slightly louder I'd be quite happy. All I really use it for is listening to spoken word content.

That's incredible clever! That would give you stereo in both landscape and portrait! It sounds like something Apple would do. I'd be immensely surprised if it turned out to be a mono speaker.

Asus and alienware were doing that years ago. I'm sure the sell xps had one too when first released.

Oh ok, didn't know that. Of course Apple were putting in mini subwoofers before Alienware were even making laptops. :)

To me this could be a big reason why anyone could buy an IPAD.

If you could use it as a portable music system for parties or anywhere.

Why have to get a separate speaker Dock

I hope apple haven't missed this (as well?) but build in decent speakers and this could sell as a stand alone music player.

Imagine 1000's of songs on tap ANYWHERE- yes that's what an ipod does but only you can listen to it unless you have a bulky speaker dock.
