Do you think you will be using your iPad more stand alone than say you've used your iPhone? Right now, very seldom do I connect my iPhone to my Mac mini for syncing. I don't know when my bookmarks have been synced. I use Google calendar and contacts via Exchange. The only time I really connect the two is when I move videos over to watch but that doesn't happen often (screen too small). As far as files I use Dropbox to get to my desktop files for viewing and DocsToGo for editing.

I can see me connecting my iPad even less than I do for my iPhone. I am hoping Dropbox will come up with an app which will let me download docs to iWorks. As far as videos from iTunes, I can see myself purchasing them on the iPad and only moving them to my desktop when the iPad gets full. Photos I will upload from my camera via the USB connector and only moving them over to my desktop when space gets limited.

Really, the only app I am using right now on my desktop that I won't have on my iPad is Quicken. I rely on Quicken alot and couldn't do with out it. What I'm hoping though is somewhat to connect my iPad to my Mac mini via VNC to get access to my Quicken.

Any thoughts or ideas?

I definitely do see myself using the iPad with only the rarest syncing once it's been initialised.

Me too but my wife definitely... she doesn't really likes computers but loves the 2G iPhone that I gave her when I upgdraded it.
She'll be able to do anything on the iPad that she now does on her netbook - checking emails, reading news watching youtube videos etc. - without asking me to see where she needs to click if a message pops up on the screen asking if she wants to allow this or that... :)
Once the iTunes library will be loaded no need to connect it to the computer other than occasional syncing with iTunes and maybe iPhoto.
I can't give up the laptop because of the photography but it will be perfect to show the photo albums to family and friends.
