iPad syncing, back-ups are too slow to bear

It seems to take forever to sync/back up my iPad!!
I plugged my iPad to my MBP to back up; after 7 hours or so, still halfway done. that means, it's taking more than 14hrs to back up.
too slow to bear.


It is true that I have about 1.3GB of Docs on "GoodReader" transferred via Wi-Fi. other than that, my iPad is pretty clean with not many garbage apps. I have a proswitcher though.

However, it still takes forever to install/remove an app even though it is under 10MB.

I turned off the iPad, turned it back on and then tried again. the problem still persists.

I do not know what to do. :(
anybody with similar problem?

Easy. Don't back up. I am not trying to be a smartass but if you have to restore, why restore from a possibly corrupted backup? I've never backed up and when I did restore my iPad, it copied all of the contact, calendar, emails, music, etc... back like new. Of course I had to remember to put in my passwords but this is not too hard.
 
Usually my iPad does take longer to back-up/sync than compared to my iPhone 3GS or iPod touch 2G. Normally, I would say it takes only 5-10 minutes longer. However, I tried to sync it yesterday and had the same thing going on that you are experiencing. My iPad synced for 2 hours and wasn't even half way done with the back-up process. I might expect that if I never synced my iPad, but my last sync/back-up was just the prior day.

I thought I've heard of a way to disable the back-up portion of the sync. I believe it requires your iPad to be jailbroken. Does anyone know how to do this?

Just for reference, I'm using a PC with Windows 7 and iTunes 9.2.

seems like alot of users experiencing the same issue.
Apple needs to fix it asap... :(

No idea what the problem is mine syncs really fast and i always use wifisync which should theoretically be slower
 
Click the little "x" on the right of where iTunes displays messages to skip whatever action it is doing when you click it, for that session. That is, when it says "backing up," click the "x" and it will skip backup for that sync session.

This does work! I thought that would kill the sync, but indeed it only cancels the back-up process. Many thanks!

I have been doing this since it would not back-up at all..
damn apple... !!

Also, you can transfer PDFs into GoodReader via iTunes.
 
Backups will take longer than usual if you loaded a number of files and apps onto your device, especially if you did so by using just the device away from your computer. Usually people buy a ton of apps using the device away from the computer and their devices will go through weeks without a computer sync. Or they sync/save documents (like the 1.3gb documents of the OP) to an app: Pages, PDF readers, etc. There is nothing wrong with this except that your iTunes will recognize every change and try to register these to your computer with the backup. Now, you must remember that these backups are precautions for the event when something will happen to your device and you need to restore, you won't lost data in your device.

If your backup takes a while, leave it be and let it complete. Because of this, your next backup will only be a minute or so. Backup and sync with your computer as often as possible. That's why I always recommend to buy your apps using your computer and sync your device that way. Painless and fast. Everytime you sync, backup only takes a minute or so that way. Except when you have just loaded another huge number of files again. Yesterday, I loaded over a gb of CBR files to my Comic Zeal app. On my next sync, my backup took about a couple hours. But I didn't mind because that's the nature of the beast. After that, all my backups now are just a few seconds long.

For those that dreads the backup process because it takes a while, pray that you won't need to Restore your device in the future because all your data and content will be gone if you don't have that iTunes backup file in your computer. I suggest to find the time for it, like overnight before you go to bed, and let it run its course however long it will be. Just adjust the iPad screen brightness to zero and leave it till it's done. The next day, you'll be surprised how fast your next backup is.

Yeah... you are totally right!
before I did not add any files on
GoodReader, syncing takes less than 1 minute.
After adding about 3.5GB of files on GoodReader, syncing takes forever.

Therefore, the conclusion is either syncing it if you can wait for 6 hours or not syncing it at all.
you can transfer files/folders easily by using the GoodReader USB really fast and efficiently.

If you're willing to accept the consequences of not having to backup EVER, then that's totally your choice. But just a reminder, you'll need to Restore your device someday esp when a new OS update arrives, and that backup file will certainly come in handy if you don't want to load every single app and file that was deleted from the Restore.

If your 6 year old doesn't want to take a shower because he hates it, NEVER taking a shower ever is a crazy solution. Sometimes we have to do some things that are not so comfortable, like not being able to play with our toys for a few hours because we loaded 3gb worth of files. :cool:

It's not like every single update after that would be 6 hours each.
 
Wow. And here I thought the hour or so ours took was bad. Last week I thought I could quick add a big app in a few minutes...

Hopefully they are working on optimizing it all now that it isn't a secret project.
