Questions

1. With an iPad, can you tv out YouTube on the big screen in your living room etc?

2. While browsing in safari or any web browser, can you t.v. that out?

3. T.v out games and apps?

Say, I'm at my friends house or have company over, have an iPad at my side and we decide to check out YouTube in the living room. It would be nice, REALLY nice to watch youtube on the t.v. with an iPad.

Would also be cool going through apps/games, Web browsing together etc on the t.v (no flash sucks insert here) by just nonchalantly hooking up the iPad.

Video out will only work with particular versions of some apps, such as Keynote, which lets you switch slides on your iPad while the actual slides are displayed on the output video source. You can play videos from your iPod library, but I'm not sure about YouTube videos. I know for sure that the iPad outputs video at a half decent resolution, 1024x768, which is still shy of 720p HD, so the quality isn't too great if you're outputting video to a high resolution display.

I currently haven't heard of any such doggle, but that doesn't mean that in the future it won't exist. They have this such doggle right now for the iPhone and iPod touch, which allows the user to plug into the 30-pin connector, and then have the images projected onto a TV thru Composite Cables.

I believe it will only be a matter of time until such a cable is released. Who knows, maybe an HDMI connector as well.

Just knowing that they have such features now for the iPhone and iPod Touch, its not hard to believe that it could be compatiable with the iPad. Who knows, I'm just speculating.

There is a dock connector to VGA cable for the iPad.

A VGA cable is capable of a higher resolution than the iPhone's composite cable connector, but still doesn't output at 720p in this setup. Unfortunately, the dock connector is nowhere near capable of outputting video through a HDMI cable. 1024x768 is the best we'll see out of it.

TVing out GOOGLE MAPS as a group, would be awesome. World satellite images/street view... You controlling it, pinch zooming.. I'd feel like an analyst or news anchor from cnn, minus the 50"+ multi touch screen... in a way : )

I know that developers have found unofficial APIs that allow them to output their games to the iPad. The question is, does the SDK allow them to put in, say a button, that can then output content to the iPad like it does in Keynote? Keynote is, after all, a downloadable app--though Apple doesn't need approval. If 3.2 doesn't have this API as a standard element, I can see it being added as a major new feature in OS 4.0. I plan on buying the VGA adapter, and this would make it a lot more worth my money.

ohhh ok im with you. they seem like a slightly less likely feature to be added. but would be awsome to have!

gaming on such a TV wouldnt be possible, not at native resolutions anyway. the ipad is what, 1024x768.. it wont be able to convert to 1080p, i guess 720p is on the cards though!

I thought the VGA adaptor, allowed you to hook a TV/monitor up to the iPad. So you see what you're doing on the iPad, just like a MacBook... makes sense to me...

iPad TVing out Google maps, youtube, safari, apps and even games would be GREAT if possible.


Everything you do, including home screen on a big tv, would be awesome. Especially in full screen.

If it's possible on April 3rd to do that, that puts it on another level. Hope there's a lot more tv out other than itunes videos and keynote..

This adapter says it will work w/the iPad as well. However, as others have said, it likely will only do the video app.

The problem with the VGA output is that it's at a crummy resolution. Like 480p or something... about as good as DVD quality, but not 1024x768 like the actual iPad screen, let alone 720p or 1080p. I was bummed they couldn't at least make it do 1024x768 output, so you get 1:1 output via VGA.

I really would love a future version of the iPad with 1080p output (and more memory!). At that point, it'd replace my blu-ray player. Plus, I could actually use it for photography presentations on my 1080p projector. But, I think the hardware simply isn't quite there yet. Maybe another year or two for that... perhaps the iPad v3.

I believe that any app developer can write support for the video out accessory into their app, but unless they specifically code it then there is no support. (It's much easier to make it display different stuff on the TV than to make it just mirror the interface.)

Previously, I had the impression 576p was "the max" via any connector... which seemed like a bummer.

Upscaling isn't really acceptable for my picky standards ;-). But, 1024x768 is certainly better than I'd thought, so that's good news. I'm sure a future version of iPad will do 1080p output.

This also seems to imply it can output 720p video... which is better than the iPad can display on-screen. That might be good enough to be a video source for many uses... it'd be great if I could just use iTunes to "rent movies" and then feed them into my projector (which can accept VGA & figure out how to display it without distorting it). Netflix is OK, but it's nice to have options. I think 720p would be the minimum I'd really want to pay to see for most movies.
