Apple's got something up it's sleeve.

I wouldn't go spend cash bucks on one simply because my MacBook Pro and an iPhone would do suitably for my purposes (except that right now I still don't have an iPhone and get along fine).

If, IF IF IF, Apple is making ready for something 'netbook-like' it will not the netbook everyone thinks of when they hear "Netbook." I have no doubt Apple will do something different, if they do bring a product to market.

Yea, agreed. The only reason I would buy one is a serious case of iWant. :p

It either needs to be $599 or less, or they'll need to seriously drop the price of the white MacBook to make this make a lick of sense.

CNET claims the rumored iPad device may provide a new alternative to netbooks, confirming what many have already speculated here on MR. I would definitely be willing to drop 700 on such a device. Any thoughts on the success of such a device? And would you be willing to buy one?
Pretty much what I've been thinking…

This gap is bigger than the one between the Mac mini and the Mac Pro, and after reading that and one of the links from the page, I'm even more convinced that this "iPad"/"iWrite" mini-tablet is the mythical device between an iPod touch and a MacBook.

For pricing, I think $499 is possible depending on the capacity and display size (and other specs), but if so, then other models would go higher.

Not for work

Am I the only one that finds touch screens to be a huge pain in the rear to do a lot of work on? Ugh.

I fully agree, but take into account that desktops will always be the "work horse" for long hours of typing and designing.

An iPad would be used for brief messaging/emailing and internet. I don't know about you, but 90% of my computer time is just that - email and searching for information. That's why since I bought my iphone, I never use my home computer (24" iMac) unless I have some reason - want a big screen, going to use specific software or a game. If I'm reading my online magazines or books or whatnot, I would rather have a tablet to be on the couch with me or in the car with me or at the coffee shop with me. Something less than a laptop, but not as useless as a netbook. (Personally, I think netbooks are stupid. If I really want to work, I'll use a desktop, otherwise iphone-tab-pad me)

If it is just a tablet I won't be interested. I don't want fingerprints all over what I'm trying to read.

If they made it more like a larger version of the Nintendo DSi I'd be very interested. Touch screen for trackpad / keyboard / gestures and a regular screen for the main display. Definitely would spend the $700 or more in that case
