So as my signature says I used to be the owner of a Unibody MacBook 2.4 Ghz decked out with 4Gb RAM and Moshi Palmguard/Clearguard.
My first Mac, got it first day they came out in October 2008. Best computer I ever had, and almost 2 years later was still going strong! Never had ONE issue with it.
So last weekend it got stolen from my house (I work for a university and live in a staff house on campus). I almost NEVER leave my MacBook at home, but last weekend I had to leave town in a hurry with the girlfriend and decided to just leave it at my house. Little did I know that it was going to be the last time I ever saw it ;(. Somebody broke into my house and that was the only thing they stole.
So since then ive been weighing my options. Yesterday I went and purchased an iPad for work and am trying to see if I can survive without a MacBook.
I have a PC at the office and an iPhone 4. So I decided to give the ipad a try in order to see if it can replace my MacBook for the most basic functions.
Here are my concerns:
- getting my music off my iPhone to MobileMe so I can stream it from my PC to my iPhone an iPad.
- streaming videos from my external HDD to my iPad
- setting up some external storage accessible from the iPad

What do you guys think? Am I crazy for even trying this?
What are your suggestions for apps that could fill my needs?

BTW I am loving the iPad. It's such a great complement to my iPhone. Love the size of the screen and ease of use. It makes me think that an ideal setup would be an iPad, iPhone and Mac mini hooked up to tv. ?? Needless to say this was typed from my iPad ;)

Hi, sorry to hear about your laptop. I can certainly relate to your position (my MacBook pro has been broken for over a month now). So for the past month I've been using my iPad as my main computer. I can't help you with your concerns, because I managed to get my media into my iPad before my laptop died, but as for the rest, the only thing I would need a Mac is for Photoshop and Illustrator. The rest is covered in some way or another, but hey that's what thinking differently is all about ;) yes it'll take some time to get used to, but with the right apps and open mindedness the potential of this machine is limitless. Even though I'm getting my computer back in the next couple of days, I can't really see myself going back completely to w regular computer ever again. If you don't need powerful apps like photoshop, then you're covered with the iPad. I hope you find this device as useful as I have.

A question to the OP, if you dont mind me asking. What city do you live in? you seem to be so non shallant about getting your house broken into. i'd be feeling pretty terrified

I'm not nonchalant at all, but what good will it to for me to freak out about it now? The only thing they took was the macbook.. fortunately for me i guess.

How did they get in?

I am always worried about getting my house broken into. I wish it was legal for me to have an assault rifle.

What would you do with the assault rifle after they have broken in and taken all your stuff and gone while you are away? It is likely they would take the rifle too if they found it :D

Jokes aside, I agree it is a sick feeling when your house gets broken into. My house got broken into last year bang in the middle of the afternoon. Nobody was in the house. They took my White Macbook which was almost in new condition and a brand spanking new 15" Unibody Macbook Pro. Still hurts when I think of it.

My MacBook Pro Replacement Experience

The answer to your question depends totally on what you use your MacBook Pro for. For me, an iPad is NOT an optional replacement since I use InDesign, Photoshop and other apps with regularity. HOWEVER, for many people, the iPad can really serve as a laptop replacement. I had both my iPad and my MacBook Pro with me when I went to my last two week Intensive (a Masters Degree level class where we do an entire semester in two weeks). After a couple of days, it was clear that when I went to class, leaving the MacBook at the (secure) dorm room was great option. I had everything I needed for class on my iPad, including Kindle versions of all but one of the 5 course textbooks. That came as a very pleasant surprise and lightened my load considerably. Essentially, if you use your laptop for reading, web surfing, email, note-taking and straightforward word processing, the iPad will handle all that very well, with a wide array of helpful, entertaining, educational apps already available. I suspect the iPad will be increasingly useful. The downsides: it needs a camera: preferably a dual camera like the iPhone4 for Skyping, and why Apple chose not to put in an SD slot is beyond me. Both features are MUSTS for the next version.

Problem is that if it's legal for you to have an assault rifle it's legal for them too. They're burglars..they don't want to hurt you.

If you honestly think you can replace a MBP with an iPad, then you never really needed a MBP in the first place. Buy an iPad.

Forget the assault riffle, get yourself a nice .45 acp 1911 with home defense rounds. My Springfield Armory Trp operator 1911 sits nicely right next to my ipad.:D

or ipad to replace mbp because when you think you just need your battery replaced and then it doesnt charge after the battery is replaced at the apple store. now apple has my mbp.
