Do I need to buy one of these?

I had the lightning version for my old iPad, but seems alot to just connect and stream to tv. Is this the best option?

A dock would allow you to keep the iPad charged, which USB-C to HDMI would not. Just depends on your use case if you want that or not.

But for that kind of price I’d consider just getting an Apple TV and using AirPlay.

I'm with #3 on opting for AppleTV but then a dock vs. a cable. Among other things, a good dock choice can work with MB too when on the go. A multi-port dock (just one of many examples) can get upwards of ALL of the common-use ports still actively used in 2024 in one little package, so you can connect to about anything. I use one like that with both iPad and MB regularly.

Edit: don't know why it is showing "as an Amazon Associate" below as that's just a regular link to an Amazon page and I'm not set up as an affiliate. Maybe MacRumors gets the credit?

If you have a Smart TV and want to stream your iPad content to it, instead of connecting it with a USB-C to HDMI cable, you can use AirPlay.
