My family has never had an ios-device become old enough to not be supported by the latest OS update.

Now my daughter's iPad air is no longer supported by the latest OS, I would like to know how long I can wait updating it. How long will it function and what problems might we run into in the future without an updated OS?

She mostly uses it for Minecraft, youtube and Roblox, so I guess as long as these applications support older OS's we should fine, right?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Apps are the biggest issue. I expect most will continue receiving updates until iOS 14 or 15 is released.

That said, YouTube should be fine. The last app update for iOS 6 still works despite missing new features. Banking apps, not so much (you wouldn't want to anyway).

I’d expect it to still be very useful for everything besides new apps or app versions losing support.
I’d recommend selling on Facebook (someone may want an iPad Air just for reading and watching movies,) so you could maybe get a hundred or two and get the iPad 7. 🤷‍♂️

Would you be willing to spend some money on a 5th generation iPad maybe?

Thanks for the replies.

My daughter is 9 and she will be the primary user of this iPad. I think we will keep it around for another six months and see what happens in regards to support for her favorite apps. As mentioned as long as youtube, Minecraft and Roblox continues to work she will not need to upgrade. She also has an old iPhone 5S that she has inherited from her older brother who inherited it from me when I upgrade some time ago. This too will no longer have access to an updated version of iOS. Luckily enough she uses this primarily for messaging, phone calls and youtube (when on longer car rides).

Again, thanks for the input.

We also still have a really old iPad in the house which is used by my son (3 years old) and most apps still work quite ok that I originally bought although some no longer work on iOS9 I believe it's on so I had to remove some of the apps. I also have an iPad mini2 I still use a lot which also stopped now at iOS12.4.2.

Also we own two iPad Air 2's which just made the update, however after all the horror stories (no WPA2 WiFI connections possible only open ones and all after updating) I didn't update those yet to iPadOS.

Besides that our iPhone SE (wife) and my iPhone 6s probably also will get the last iOS13 as the last stop I'm afraid.

They'll probably get iOS 14, but not iOS 15.

I sure hope they will still get iOS14 otherwise we really need to invest quite some money in our devices by then. Although I almost always buy my iDevices 2nd hand from users from a Dutch tech community or via official Apple.com refurbished site.
