iPad turn by turn navigation?

With the arrival of the 3G iPad next week, I wonder if there will be any native iPad turn by turn navigation apps released? This thing could really be a killer GPS with the larger screen. The included Google maps app will already be very cool with the 3G iPad, but a native iPad GPs with voice through Bluetooth in the car would be awesome!

Have we gotten any confirmation from the major navigation app makers that we'll be getting ipad versions close to launch of the 3G iPad?

I agree. I have Navigon on my iPhone and assume it will work fine with my 3G iPad but would appreciate a graphics upgrade to match the iPad's screen.
 
And you'd mount this in your car... where exactly? It's pretty darn heavy for your average suction cup thingie. Don't put it on your windshield, especially in California, unless you want to get pulled over. ;)

I could see where the iPad could be a digital atlas-like "Thomas Guide" but, mounting it... eh. What advantage would the iPad have over other voice announcing GPS devices or smart phones?

GPS will still work but you'd need to use a navigation app that has the maps built-in. Some rely on dag a access for the maps and those would not work unless you activate the 3G. Some apps have the maps built in but they are usually 1+ GB downloads.

RAM already has an iPad mount and Instructables had an iPhone mount project a while ago that could be adapted to this as well.

Nah, I just make the wife drive while I navigate with the iPad! But yeah, if I'm alone we have a minivan and the iPad can rest nicely on the pull-out console compartment. For a more permanent solution (which I'm not interested in), there will be mounting solutions. I was more referring to using it on trips, not as a permanent mountable gps.
 
I found this article from a while back that seems to indicate at least one navigation app should be available at launch (Motion X). However, I don't think we've heard anything since, so hopefully they are just hard at work getting it ready for the 3G launch. Or... maybe it's taking longer than expected to make native iPad navigation apps. I'm just surprised that we haven't heard anything recently, especially so close to launch!

You sure about that? Keep in mind this is AGPS "assisted" and is why the wifi only version and the ipod touch lack a GPS chip.

Assisted GPS just means it will use the WIFI and cell tower signals to help the GPS receiver pinpoint a location faster. If you are not on WIFI, then it just won't be able to use that to assist in locating. And you would need preloaded maps.

What exactly are you asking?
 
Ugh, I will NEVER understand why people get such a b*ner over Turn-by-turn nav... Learn how to read a map! Is it SO difficult to follow the little line on Google Maps? Not to mention, looking at the map gives you a much better situational awareness of what the surroundings are, rather than just listening to the idiot voice that gets it wrong as often as it gets it right. Seeing the map you KNOw that you have another turn 100 yrs after this one... If you wait for the voice to tell you it is often WAY too late to be in the correct lane.

Lol Wow never heard someone actually promote a physical map over digital. Sure some have had bad experiences with GPS devices, but the shear inconvenience of having to pull over and figure out a frigin map is so impractical these days. Now that is difficult, not following a GPS already guiding you to your destination.

Bro,

I am a world class map reader. I earned my living for a few years navigating Bell Jet Rangers flying at a 120 mph with a stack of topo maps on my lap. I even had university courses in mapping and aerial photo interpretation. Guess what? I wouldn't leave my house with out my Garmin GPS. GPS map technology is freaking unreal. Don't leave home without it.

p.s. The latest versions of Garmin Road GPSes give you lane assist that actually shows a image of what the upcoming turns will look like. I bought a new unit strictly for that feature. If I avoid one accident it was way worth the cost.

Turn by turn or not, it will be nice having a gps enabled map on the ipad while you are on the road. Whether you simply use the built-in Google maps or a full blown turn by turn system is a personal choice. We are going to Disneyworld later this month and we plan on using the iPad with maps to make our way around Orlando and Tampa. The iPad with gps and 3G will be a great boon on our trip, I have no doubt.

That map sure will give you better situational awareness right when you slam into the back of a car when you were looking at a frigging map. The police will let you know exactly where you were with a written reminder. :rolleyes:
 
without a real GPS receiver in the iPad, how accurate are you expecting the iPad to be when it comes to turn by turn directions ?

What do you mean by without a real GPS receiver?
iPad 3G's will have built-in aGPS module.
I expect it to be as accurate as iPhone 3G/3Gs.
