iPad unlocked = iPhone 4.0 unlocked?

I don't know about justifying this with a serious response, but...

- The iPad demo had iPhone OS 3.2

- The iPad is unlocked in the sense of SIM lock to carrier

- Apple has sold iPhones that were unlocked in the same sense for some time now, and AFAIK, the existence of these phones has not been one of the mechanisms that enabled hackers to unlock the iPhone.

I'm pretty sure the OP was asking whether this made it likely that Apple would sell a factory-unlocked iPhone in the US.

The iPad uses a new Micro Sim, try finding another carrier that uses those (TMobile in the US does not), I bet they switch to those in the next iPhone as well to make it even harder to use on another carrier.

If you want to buy a $99-299 iPhone, its cheaper because the cell phone carrier is subsidizing the cost, and they lock the iPhone so you continue to use their services.

On AT&T in the US $599 gets you a contract free iPhone not an unlocked one, it's still locked. Not sure about other countries.

Unlocked and jailbroken are two different things. Plus, like was said earlier, it uses a new sim that isn't compatible with anyone in the US but AT&T.

If AT&T is subsidizing the next gen iPhone, it will be carrier locked. The difference with the iPad is that you are buying it outright, away from the carrier.

True. For whatever reason, it seems that if AT&T sells an Apple device, it is carrier locked (the first iPhone, even though you paid full price for it). But he iPad won't be purchased through AT&T at all. Just through Apple. Maybe they want to move toward this model?

You can make a standard sim to the size of a micro sim with a scissors and it works fine apparently....
