iPad Update Triggers iTunes Recovery Mode

I just tried to update my iPad Pro to (I think) OSX 14.?? and keep getting the screen showing to connect the device to my Mac. Itunes gives me the option of an Update or Restore. When I click on Update, nothing happens. I'm avoiding Restore for now for obvious reasons.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
 
Update - spent about 2 hrs on the phone with Apple today and my iPad is now a doorstop. Unable to update, restore or reset. Take it in to an Apple store. Good luck getting an appointment. To top it off they told me there may be a charge. This may be the last OS update I ever do.
