I was so dissappointed by iPad and I instantly thought if Apple could make a Macbook Air 10inch. This would be something...
Maybe iPad 3rd generation will be a killer. But now it is just a fancy gadget. Wouldnt you prefer an Air 10" ?!

Sure, if they sell it for $499 (which would never happen). I'm just amazed at a lot of postings. Folks on these message boards must be mighty rich. I know I'm retired and living on a retirement income, so I have to be careful of what I spend my money on.

a macbook air 10" defeats the purpose of the air....

its a light system with keeping screen real-estate, a 10" is a ridiculous idea and will never happen.

i love my air, and i know they will never change it....better specs and maybe a redesign.

but all in all...it sells well and they will keep it.

Ya, maybe if it was priced @ $499... but I think I'd feel left out for the Touch capabilities of the ipad.. lol

But thats just me

A 10" screen on a conventional computer sucks. It's too small to do anything, so no I wouldn't prefer a 10" MBA. Then again I bought a 13" MBP, not a 13" MBA because the MBA isn't much of a computer.

Yup I'd buy it over the ipad, but apparently it'll never happen, so go buy a netbook and hack os x on it, that's the best you'll get.

It is not too small to do anything but it is too small for everyday and all day use. If that is your intent then a 10" Air or a 10" iPad is not going to be your bag.

No way. No interest in a small, crippled computer that tries to be everything, but does each thing badly. OTOH, an iPad will slip nicely into the bag for my MacBook Pro and that bag has a nice little pocket for my iPod Touch too. So I'm good to go for portable music, portable video, and portable computing, each device best for its designed task.

Nope. I've already got an Asus EEE 10" . Its a pain to use for everyday tasks. Using it for email/web can be a drag sometimes because I need to sit there and wait for the damn thing to boot. So many times I'll just reach for the iPhone instead.

I would get a 10" in a heart beat.

This, although I think a 11.6" screen would be the sweet spot. Make the display edge to edge to keep the form factor down, the keyboard like the wireless kb, bang in a 2.0ghz C2D, 4gb RAM and a 128GB SSD and I'd pay whatever price it takes. Never happen though sadly :(

If the MBA was actually ultraportable I'd buy one...in a heart beat too.

I dunno. I've got a Lenovo S10 Hackintosh and it's miserable for most tasks b/c function bars hog up the screen. You can turn off the menus of course, but then you either have to memorize a bunch of commands or dig through pull down menus. The 1024 x 600 resolution doesn't help.

I think the real problem is that recent computer OSes were not designed for 10" screens where as the iPhone OS is designed for small screens.

I have a netbook already. It's not the power of the machine making me want to sel it for an iPad, it's the cramped keyboard and desktop OS being shoehorned onto a tiny screen. At least the iPad has an interface designed specifically for small displays and while it doesn't fix te keyboard problem exactly, it is enough smaller than the netbook to make packing a full-size BT (or dock connected) keyboard a reasonable option for serious text input.

So, no, I would not buy a 10" MB Air.

Nope, I'd take the iPad over a 10" Air any day. Thinner, lighter, and powerful enough for me. And if you disagree, wait a year, after which time we will have gotten a deluge of "real" apps for the thing. You'll see. The benefit of the Air you perceive now will disappear.

I'm going all iPad all the time from Day 1.

You hit the nail right on the head.

I think the comparison between an iPad and mini-laptop isn't helpful.

The iPad is an instant on device not meant for type intensive data entry. Also, like the original Palm, it should have quick, resource light, applications that launch quickly.

A laptop is overkill for the situations where a tablet form factor is preferable. In fact, it can be argued that many laptop users didn't buy their laptops to take advantage of all the power laptops offer. Instead, they bough them because they are only viable mobile devices with a reasonable amount of power to perform the tasks they want.

Additionally, laptops, while mobile, are generally hampered- They need to be placed on a surface, either a table or a lap, to be able to type effectively. This is also necessary to launch programs which also must be navigated from a position where the trackpad is usable.

A tablet, on the other hand, is ideal for a number of mobile situations that laptops are currently used in for lack of a compelling alternative.

And I wouldn't put a desktop OS on a tablet either. Microsoft has proven the difficulty in this and for Apple it would only dilute OS X and diminish the experience of using, particularly when compromises are made to the desktop OS in order to accommodate the touch interface.

If you want an MBA then you need to go that route. It's not like the current 13" model is bulky or heavy. The iPad is not in competition with the iPad. At any rate Apple would never sell a new MBA for $499 so kind of a moot point.
