A theory: the iPad and iPhone will never have feature parity. Apple will constantly have one in front of the other so we feel compelled to buy both devices.

When the iPad came out, it had several features iPhone did not have, as well as an advanced 3.2 OS number. Now, iPhone has some features iPad does not have and iOS 4 running on it. However, a lot of iOS 4 for iPhone was catch-up to the iPad. Once iOS 4 for iPad is released, it will have some features not on the iPhone. Once hardware for iPad 2 is released, probably next year, it will leap ahead of the iPhone...until the new iPhone next summer. Then we'll start all over again with people complaining they just bought an iPad two months ago and now the iPhone has this and that feature.

Apple has set us up for the same discussion year after year after year. It's gonna be great!

isn't this kind of a moot argument?

firstly, you can't compare an iPad to an iPhone in terms of usage and needs for a consumer. An iPhone is a smartphone, an iPad is a tablet/media consumption device.

I don't expect to make phonecalls with my iPad or video conferencing, nor do I expect my iPhone to be capable of letting me write notes in class or edit photos and drawings.

No duh we're compelled to buy both devices, BECAUSE neither one is a replacement for the other, not even remotely.

And obviously each firmware contains things that are different for each device, they're tailored to the specific needs and specs that each device can handle. Not to mention, it's a smart marketing ploy.

That's my point. For those complaining about the lack of feature parity, it's a marketing strategy. There will never be feature parity, for the reasons you noted and for business reasons. People who buy either device need to realize they will soon see the other device get newer/better specs/features shortly thereafter.
