iPad vs. iPod Touch 4G

Hey guys. I know it's rather tough to compare these devices, especially since one hasn't even been released yet, but I'm trying to make a decision: Buy an iPad now, or wait until September and check out the new iPod Touches.

I own a MacBook Pro, and I used to have a 1G iPod Touch that died recently. I was 95% sure I wanted to buy an iPad, but reading about possible features of the new iPod Touches has me reconsidering (possible FaceTime, Retina display, etc.)

I'm on my MBP constantly. Surfin the web, watching videos, listening to music. I feel like I'd definitely use the iPad a lot with these tasks. Also, slowing down the usage of my MBP might extend the life of the battery.

On the other hand, my main focus is my music library. I'm a huge music buff, and also a DJ on the side, and I need a new iPod with more capacity since my Touch is a goner. So maybe something more portable and inexpensive would work better for me like an iPod Touch.

The iPad is so damn cool, but yet it's so damn hard for me to commit to putting the money into it. I have the money, I just hate spending it :rolleyes: Plus, the nearest Best Buy is 2 hours away, and they never have them in stock. I'd probably already own one if they had them in stock. I'm just thinking too much about it all now, haha.

Maybe I should buy both? I don't know. I don't even know why I made this thread. Guess I just figured I'd ask for some opinions. Another note: I'm a college student. I'm not sure how useful an iPad would be for a student!

Any advice is appreciated. :)
 
well, it sounds like you need something for music, but not much else, because you have a MBP and because of price.


Sounds like you should wait for the iPod Touch.
 
Retina display on the iPhone is nice --- because it's a phone. It sort of has to be higher resolution to make up for the small display size. If someone were to make me choose between the iPhone and the iPad tomorrow, I'd pick the iPad. The iPod Touch with retina display technology will certainly be an improvement over the current iPod Touch, but it won't make it seem like a 9" display. I can read on my iPad for a couple of hours at a time. I go about 5 minutes on my iPhone before I get irritated with it.

Depends on what your ultimate needs are, but don't kid yourself into thinking the iPad is "just a big iPod Touch" - that's a cute and pithy comment, but it's not accurate in real-world experience.
 
Ok, I have an iPad, iPod Nano (3rd gen), non Mac laptop (I won't go into why, cause I don't want to have to slap some idiot because they made a moronic comment) and a cheap pay as you go cell phone, with my contract ATT sim card in it.

I find a use for all devices. I am not trying to make my iPad into an iPod. When I am away from home, I fall asleep listening to the iPod, sometimes it ends up on the floor. It is also easier plugging the iPod into the Stang, it fits into the center counsole, plus that is where the USB plug is. Kind of awkward with the iPad. I use the iPad more than I use the laptop, but I still need the laptop.

I am not sure how good it would be for school work. It is a pain doing spread sheets on the iPad and making them compatable with excel.

You never mentioned how large your music collection is. But I personally use both an iPad and iPod, and I will continue to do so.

But I guess you are in a jam cause iPod broke, new release coming out soon.

Because you have a working laptop, I would hold off a bit. Hopefully you will meet someone with an iPad and they will let you play with it for a while.
 
Thanks for the advice guys. I guess I'll just be patient, and see how things go. I have a feeling that if I go to Best Buy and they have them in stock, I'd walk out with one. But I know I'll want an iPod Touch as well.

Damn you Apple. Making products I want.

I decided to get an iPad 3g as soon as they were available and that was still a painful wait. If you can do it wait. I'm still interested in the gen4 touch or perhaps it will turn out to be a mini iPad and when that happens I may get it.
However it has to compliment my iPad and be a device that is pocketable.
It also has to have GPS for directions and location based services. A combination of GPS and cellular 3G would be the killer feature for me if I can take my microSIM and use it in both devices.
So my point is get the iPad now and use it and when the next Touch comes out you may decide you want both!
 
Personally, I'll probably be using both.

Owned a netbook, desktop and 3rd gen Touch. I actually used the Touch while at home more when I wanted to check email and check something quick online. So I figured if I enjoyed using the Touch for some of the more basic functions, getting an ipad would be a no brainer especially with the larger screen. No regrets with my decision.

Now i'm just awaiting the 4th gen Touch. Hoping it will feature facetime as well as being the primary device for my music.

You could get an iPhone.
 
OP, depending on your needs, the iPad can serve as a Netbook type device. It's small, lightweight, easy to carry and very functional. The battery lasts a long time. With 3G you can connect to the Internet anywhere which is very convenient.

My suggestion if you are unsure of which device to get, is wait until the new iPod touch is released (probably September) and then make your decision.

Not all of us want an iPhone or are happy with their non ATT carrier and do not intend to switch. I just went through a period of trying to get a phone with a touch screen work and I was very frustrated by response lag with the touch screen. I like the old fashioned always working real keys that I can find without looking over a virtual keyboard thank you.
 
Depends on what you need it for really. I used to travel a lot, so the iPad was nice on a plane, airport, etc. However, now its nice for around the house and on vacations. I have the 3G, which I think is the biggest differentiator from an iPod Touch. Disney hotels have no in-house wifi which is incredible in itself, but the 3G iPad came in VERY handy that week. It the iPod Touch had a little larger of a screen, say as large as the HTC, and had 3G access, I probably wouldn't own an iPad. That said, the screen interface for portable browsing, games, and video is incredible.

I travel a lot by car now a days for my job, so I'm trying to decide on whether i want an iPod Touch or Nano. I don't want my iPad sitting on the front seat when sync'd for music, so one of the other devices will be necessary. I've got a shuffle for running and biking, but of course, you have little visual interface or control.

So again, it depends on what you are doing with it.

Buy an iPhone and cancel the service?
