What's a recommended app for controlling/VPN/shared desktop from your iPad to control your mbp?

Or "VNC Viewer" I'm pretty happy with it. Used "Mocha VNC" before, but "VNC Viewer" looks mch more mature.
Just saw the video to iTeleport. VNC Viewer looks same or better, but costs only 10$ and is also a Universal App.

If I set up my Mac to allow screen sharing or remote desktop mgt., how secure or unsecure does that then make my mbp to outside hackers or attackers?

Make sure it's password protected in system prefs. I woke up one morning went downstairs and saw someone start mousing around on my iMac. I learned about vnc passwords the hard way. Fortunately I caught it just in time.

Thanks. I found the password option, but aren't passwords susceptible to password crackers? Is vnc just really insecure, so maybe i should encrypt sensitive docs on my hdd?

I recommend you try the free Mocha VNC Lite, and then if you need more than what it does think about which of the paid versions you might want, including the paid Mocha VNC.

So far I haven't needed anything more. Though control-key functionality would be nice.

Though the one thing I would recommend is making sure you have closed all the extra pages in mobile Safari, which will keep the app open in the background and use memory that VNC Lite needs to show your MBP screen at it's full resolution. Dropping your MBP's resolution while you're away is another option of course.

And have any of the paid versions figured out how to do drag and drop functionality?

I'm going to have to go with iTeleport. Didn't like the way they handled their customers in the beginning (remember when it was Jaadu VNC and they dropped the price, but tried to tell everyone that they're going to charge for updates? Wasn't even enforceable by the App Store, as program updates are free). However, they do offer a "Touchscreen Mode" that I don't recall seeing on other VNC clients.

I can remote into my desktop and just tap on the close button, tap on a text field, tap on the Apple logo, well, you get the picture.

Thankfully, iTeleport is now Universal, too.

I'm hoping that one of these VNC clients or LogMeIn is going to be smart enough to pull up the keyboard when one clicks on a text field. That would really be a nice touch.

I don't use VNC app, but try logmein.com. Works across the internet, so if you leave your Mac at home, you can still access it via the logmein ignition app. The app is costly, but works great.
