Apple can, but they won’t. Apple doesn’t want to create the situation where you do not need to buy an additional Mac.

An iPad, will always be just an iPad.

Apple specifically says iPad isn’t a computer. In fact, they don’t refer to it as a tablet. They’re careful to call it an iPad. Basically, it’s a device category on its own.

I am happy with my 2020 12.9” iPad Pro.
iPadOS (which in reality is just iOS rebranded) is garbage!
The 2020 iPad Pro is ok, but going forward next gen iPads like the M series iPad Pros are held back by iPhone OS/iOS.

"I am happy with my 2020 12.9 iPad Pro" also reveals there is little to no incentive to upgrade to an M1 iPad Pro - I have an 2020 12.9 iPad Pro and personally find no reasons to upgrade to any new iPads.

People are paying for laptop level specs with iPhone software.

The iPad Pro may look like a computer when attached with keyboard and mouse, but it's operating system/environment surely isn't.

Too many people prefer to excuse the limitations thinking its still 2010 and not push forward.

Hopefully it will take serious competition from Samsung with a powerful OS that matches the hardware to show Apple's folly.

It was Samsung that gave the market what it wanted with bigger phones at a time when Apple insisted on keeping the iPhone small...now Apple can't help but sell iPhone Max Plus Ultra large et... like their life dependent on it.

Hopefully Samsung will do the same with a bigger tablet OS.

Apple shouldn't fear the iPad cannibalising or replacing the Macbook, Apple should fear the competition replacing the iPad.

I will always need my MacBook Pro for it's more stationary abilities, power and features...but there is NO reason for me/many power users to upgrade iPads going forward.

It can be, and already is for many people.
BUT I agree that Apple is holding it back with iPadOS, and that is a damn shame.

If the rumored budget iPad 2021 upgrade will bring Air-like design, A13 and pencil2 support. Then I believe this will be the iPad to buy for most people - until Apple decides to unleach the iPads true potential with software matching its hardware.
