iPad Won't Sync with MKV to MP4 720p Videos

I converted some mkv files (1280x720p x264, AC3) to mp4 using QuickTime 7 and Perian by exporting to mp4 with the video set to pass thru, and the audio set to AAC 160 Kbps 48 kHz. ITunes won't let them sync with my iPad, but it doesn't tell me why. One possible issue is that the atom (something I know nothing about) has been reported as having a length larger than the whole file by another program. Is there something I can change with my conversion method or an application on the Mac that will repair the atom?

Your first mistake was using Quicktime for video conversion. It works "okay", but is exceedingly slow and if you get one tiny thing wrong your video won't sync.

Oh, I love Handbrake. The problem is that there is no pass thru option that I know of. All I need QT to do is convert the audio. In that way, it is faster than HB.

Profile problem

I had a similar problem with the .mkv to .mp4 problem, as well as DVDs ripped from Handbrake under the Apple TV setting not synching and I narrowed the problem down to the profile information in the video files. The iPad only supports h.264 videos (which mkv videos typically are) with the following specs:

"H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats"

Download the free application MediaInfo and open up the videos you're having problems with and you'll likely see that the profile for those videos are 4.1 or 5.1, not the 3.1 that the iPad supports. Every one of videos that will sync to my iPad are profile 3.1, and every video that won't happen to be some other profile.

I was looking for a way to convert MKV to Xbox/MP3 capable mp4's the other day and I came across a program called Subler ( http://code.google.com/p/subler/ )

It trancodes MKV's to MP4's without converting them. I haven't tried it with the iPad yet, but it should work.

I use Handbrake, and there's an audio tab available for you to adjust the settings as needed. Handbrake takes longer than I'd like, but it works incredibly well.

I've tried most converters and found AkrVideo to never fail me, just feed whatever format in to the AirVideo server and select Convert. Pick up the converted mp4 and load it in to iTunes. Sync with iPad and boom schackalack!!

No one can recommend anything other than handbrake because it is simply amazing

On the current jail broken iPhone, a platform 4 years old, can one play divx or xvid or mkv files yet given the right player like vlc4iphone? If not, then I am not hopeful of not having to transcode. It is so slow and unenjoyable to do.
