Ipad Air 2 running 8.3. When I try to update it over wifi it says "unable to check for update", yet it definitely is on wifi and has internet access. When I hook it up to a Mac it gives me two options: Setup as new ipad, or Restore from backup. I don't want to do either since it is a work ipad. I just want to update the OS to the latest version.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried hard resetting the iPad?

  1. Download Apple Configurator on your Mac from the Apple App Store.
  2. Open the app.
  3. Connect iPad.
  4. Apple Configurator will ID iPad
  5. Control Click iPad
  6. Update

Boring Stuff:
Your iPad is currently running iOS and needs to update to iPadOS. I believe there was a migration from iOS12 -> iPadOS 13.

Where's the backup?
Ask work IT if it's a work iPad. Maybe they disabled update.

Or it's something like this:

  1. Download Apple Configurator on your Mac from the Apple App Store.
  2. Open the app.
  3. Connect iPad.
  4. Apple Configurator will ID iPad
  5. Control Click iPad

Is your iPad Air a cellular model?
It's wifi only.

I am in IT, updates haven't been disabled. This was an ipad that was found (don't ask me from where, it was just handed to me) from years ago and now they want it updated and given out again.
