I installed the second public beta of iPadOS 13.1 today and, I have to say, I was impressed by the betas of iPadOS 13 but 13.1 is really great.

The Files app is way more stable and, with even my now aged 9.7" Baby Pro, imports via the USB adapter are much, much better than they had been. All the multi-tasking bugs from the 13.0 release also seem to have been resolved which is the best part because it's the multi-tasking that really makes this release awesome.

I just wanted to say that I'm super stoked about where iOS/iPadOS is headed and where it'll take the iPad as a platform. I'm looking forward to getting an 11" iPad Pro once we're through October to make sure I'm not behind a year as soon as I buy it. But with where the OS is headed, I totally think the hardware is worth the money.

I thought I was done being impressed by computers ten years ago... little did I know...

Multitasking still feels like a mess to me. For example there is no way to drag an app from the home screen into split view/slide over, which was possible on 11/12...

That’s what I thought at first, but I’ve since run into quite a few problems:

- tapping the connected Smart Keyboard doesn’t wake the iPad.
- when an external HD is attached and the iPad goes to sleep, it can fall into a cycle of restarting continually every few minutes (??)
- some of the iMessage widgets (or whatever they’re called?), particularly the location sharing one (Google maps?) are blank, with no icon
- if you open the download manager in Safari, the current webpage will hang until you close the tab

I mean... that's not how the multi-tasking model on the iPad works though, is it? You need to have an app open and can then multi-task over that. Don't get me wrong, if I'm imagining correctly what you're saying, I think having a slide-over on the home screen would be great! But, as it stands, I like being in a "main" app and then being able to cycle through my communications apps on the right slide-over as messages come in without ever leaving the main thing I'm working on. That's what I think is neat!

Really? I'm on my Baby Pro now and tapping the space bar woke it up. All the keyboard problems I was having in the 13.0PB seem to have been resolved for me, at least, in 13.1. And I've also found Files to be much more stable but then I also don't leave media attached when I lock my iPad. That definitely seems like a big issue, especially if they want people to use it more "like a laptop."

I'm new to the iPad, but I'm sooo confused with the multitasking.
• If I have an app open, I can drag an app from the dock to have it split screen. This is great
• If I have an app open, I don't know how to fetch an app from the home screen to have it split screen. Is there a way to do this?
• Because of this, people must have all apps in the dock? But due to a bug (I assume), I can't drag an app from a folder within the dock. So I have to over an over and over again move apps to and away from the dock depending on which apps I want to have split screen

1) agree

2) you used to be able to drag an app from the home screen into multitasking but opening another app during the drag process. this worked on iOS11 and 12. Not exactly intuitive, but easy to do once you learn. This however doesn’t work anymore on 13. So, as far as i know, there is no way to multitasking with apps outside of the dock, except with workarounds like opening, closing them, and have them in the recent section of the dock.

I’m on iOS 13 beta 8 (I think it’s beta 8), and you can just drag an app from the home screen to an app even if it shows an “X”, and have it do split view or slide over like normal.

In the old betas I don’t think it was possible though.

Yes, it's annoying you can't just drag any app and just the ones on your dock. My workaround is to have my most used apps on the dock, but then I have a folder also on the dock with other app I use often but not as much. That way my dock doesn't look super busy.
Since iOS 13 however I've noticed that to be able to split screen from an app in the folder on my dock, I have to pull the dock up, open the folder then drag the app outside of the folder and the with my other hand (or finger) just tap outside the folder, so that closes the folder and then it allows me to use split screen or slipover.
Hope it makes sense.

On another note iOS 13.1 beta 2 on my iPP has been the most stable beta release so far too. A few bugs here and then, but much smoother overall.

I just wish we could close app instances when opening them into slide over or splitview. As in, when you already have let‘s say two instances of mail opened and would like to use the opportunity that all instances are being shown to you when you wanna pull one into splitview to close some of them, it‘s just not possible. This is such a silly overlook.

I also still have strange bugs in mail, doesnt feel polished at all!

Ah nice! However, on 13.1, when i try to do that, it creates a folder.

Yeah just tried it again this morning and it works now. Maybe the bug was related to having an external drive plugged in.
