I recently installed the iPadOS public beta, and so far I’m impressed with many of the new features (loving desktop safari and external drive support with Lightroom).

My issue is using the Apple Smart Keyboard, I’m not able to invoke the screen keyboard with the Smart Keyboard attached. With the previous non-beta IOS versions, I was able to long-press the down arrow on the bottom right corner of the screen (the text input shortcut bar), and that would bring up the screen keyboard, but pressing that does nothing now. I now have to remove the Smart Keyboard to get the screen keyboard to come up.

Sounds pretty trivial, but for anyone that likes to use the iPad in the dark, that means having to remove the Smart Keyboard to type anything. For me, this bug is making me want to restore to 12.3 despite all the new features iPadOS beta has brought.

First, I never knew about that feature so thanks for bringing it to my attention. Very handy in the dark indeed! It seems to be working for me in Dev Beta 3 so it seems very likely it will work in the next Public Beta for you.

I should have added, this issue is using the 2018 iPad Pro with the new Smart Keyboard.

report it, could be bug or removed feature
I’m a newbie on this forum. Where do I go to report it?

there is a feedback app in the beta. When I press the down error, it just gets rid of the bar at the bottom. no on screen keyboard

Thanks for the beta feedback info.

The same happens to me - the bar goes away, but no on screen keyboard pops up.

As I said above, long press already works as you'd want it to in the developer beta. This means it will almost certainly be corrected in the next public beta.

I thought the latest public beta and the current developer beta were the same build?

Usually, but the public beta seems to have been placed on hold for one reason or another (perhaps the lack of an iPhone 7 build for now) this time around. PB1 is the equivalent of DB2. DB3 is the current dev beta. No-one can say for sure but there will probably be public release next week that either matches DB3, or is released alongside DB4.

Ditto, I never new about this. I can finally use dictation and the Smart Keyboard together! Thanks @Chrisd999.

I just tried it on my Smart Keyboard and IPP 11" (2018). It is not working for me, either. I am also having the issue on the homescreen where holding the CMD key down does not open a keyboard shortcuts cheat sheet. Is that working for you? if so, the 2 issues may be related.

No, the cheatsheet isn't there for the home screen for me either.

Just to check we're all on the same page here. We are all talking about long pressing on the downward facing arrow at the bottom right of the screen in order to access the keyboard, right? Well, working for me on a 10.5"

Ah. What the op was talking about is when you're typing on the Smart Keyboard there's a bar at the bottom of your screen. At the right of it is a little downward arrow or v shape. Long pressing that should invoke the onscreen keyboard. I'd take a screenshot but don't have my iPad to hand.

Edit. Found a screenshot and circled the button in red

Ah! I just used a long press on said “button” and the onscreen keyboard appeared.
