I randomly got an idea, and maybe it does make sense. Apple is apparently gearing up to release the foldable iPhone next year, so they started preparing now. iPadOS 26 might have just been a plot to get developers to update their apps to support free window resizing, since that seems to be a requirement in the WWDC session about iPad multitasking. The reason for that is so that when Apple does release the foldable, it won’t run into weird app scaling issues caused by the new screen aspect ratio, as the apps would have already been resizable by then for over a year. It might even get further than that: front screen runs iOS, but inner screen runs iPadOS, since it’s larger. It would effectively blow competition, since a tablet os would work much better in multitasking on a larger screen than the competition’s scaled up phone os. So the foldable iPhone would get window management like a computer, when the competition doesn’t. Even better if in iOS 27 the iPhone gets stage manager, like was rumored for this year.

Kind of a long text, but I think it could make sense.

Based on recent rumors, sounds like they’re getting ready to modify iOS next year to support the foldable. I really hope it runs iPadOS and not iOS. I don’t think it would be technically feasible to run both. iPadOS can easily support the dimensions of the outer display. An app that supports iPadOS would just work with no developer effort. The outer display aspect ratio is different enough from regular iPhone that iOS apps might not scale properly.

If it runs just iOS, I’ll be disappointed.
