The Air/Pro would be notably more useful with terminal access and Xcode, Logic Pro, real filesystems. But not in unalloyed MacOS form.
It's just clumsy running full non-touch optimized applications on these - and if the use case is docking to large monitors... my god.. at that point it's just a laptop/desktop, lol.
Apple's WWDC was kind of dissapointing, sure, I'd grant that, I still fundamentally want more capabilities. JIMO though: Mac OS barely scales well as is with the smaller icons in Big Sur on a 13-inch display (I genuinely prefer Windows for legibility and ease of use on small displays, feels much more accessible). I cannot f*cking imagine how stupid it would look, how niche it would end up, and I'm glad they avoided it.
"But the 12-inch MacBook" and where is that today? Sure didn't seem mass-market to me. Only people who cared were fellas who read John Gruber with the devotion their grandfather did watch Walter Cronkite. Anyways, the better iPadOS didn't happen this year, Apple doesn't care enough. Case closed, quit bitching, buy a Surface if you care this much about a swiss-army knife edition of the iPad.
