Do you think Apple has something special prepared for the iPad this year?

It has been 10 years since the iPad was introduced. On the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, they released the iPhone X. It would be bad news if Apple doesn’t have something for the iPad this year. iPadOS 14 was mediocre, Scribble is great, but that’s all. The only new stuff on the 2020 iPad Pro was the LiDAR and the 6gb of RAM.
So I think that the only major improvement we have seen for the iPad this year was the trackpad and mouse support.

I thought they were going to mention about the iPad’s 10th anniversary on the WWDC, but they didn’t mention anything. That’s give me hope that they have something bigger in store for later this year. What do you think about it? Do you think that was the mouse support?

I wonder if we will see an A14X powered "iPad X" in September.
I found it weird when Apple announced the refreshed A12Z iPad Pro, as if they had nothing significant in the pipeline that they had to do the very modest refresh. Why couldn't they just wait for an A14X? I mean it's not like people are demanding the Lidar sensor on their iPad.

So maybe we will see another redesign?

I got the original iPad as a gift in Aug 2010 by my GF at the time that is now my wife.

I know a lot of people thought of it as a huge iPhone, which is many cases it was, but I really liked it and it was one of my favorite presents of all time (most expensive too).

It probably doesn't seem that strange now, but back in the summer of 2011, I used it as my mobile phone for a few months.

In the spring of 2011, my original iPhone that I used for almost four years started to have issues where the screen wouldn't register my touch and one day just stopped working. I could answer calls using my headset, but the phone was basically unusable.

With rumors of the 4s coming out in the fall, I didn't want to buy a new iPhone yet, so I used some VoIP service, I think it was Skype, and used the app on my iPad. While the iPad didn't have a camera, it had a mic and I could also use the headset from my iPhone.

So, for the summer of 2011, I used a giant iPad as a phone and definitely got some weird looks sometimes.

The original iPad was introduced in January 2010, so the big birthday would have been January 2020. That ship clearly has sailed.

I have one of those first-gen iPads. I saw it sobbing in the corner because everybody forgot its birthday. I tried to wipe its tears, but the Liquid Contact Indicators were already red. I brought it a cake, but without a fan it couldn't blow out the candles.

Sure, it's fine to get sentimental about these things and wonder why Apple didn't seem to care, but we're not talking about making a person feel special once a year. Product anniversaries are a way to attract consumer attention when there's nothing better to sell.

I had a 25th Anniversary Ford Mustang. Special plaque on the dash, 2.3 liter engine under the hood (not my choice, I got it used from a friend who clearly didn't care about having muscle car performance). Plenty of Mustang fans complained that Ford didn't do something more special than a little plaque on the dash. I guess they had more popular models to sell (can you say F-150, boys and girls?).

We could argue at length about whether the Magic Keyboard or Scribble are exciting, but why bother? At least I understand how they can be exciting to others, even if they have no immediate impact on my life. No everything Apple does has to be for my personal benefit.

What I do care about is my next Mac. From my standpoint, 2020 won't be the 10th Anniversary of my old iPad, it's the beginning of a new era for Mac. It's no accident that the announcement was saved for the "One more thing" slot at this year's WWDC Keynote.

The iPhone X didn’t come out in the same month as the original if I recall correctly, but in the 10th year. I don’t necessarily think they’ve missed the boat therefore, but I do think it’s unlikely as they have done the 2020 Pro. I can’t see an iPad X that isn’t a premium product, and they don’t want a kind of iPad 3/4 situation on the Pro line.

Absolutely 0 chances in my opinion. Ipad pro was already released. Rumors point to absolutely nothing in this direction and Apple is not good at keeping secrets... They have more important stuff for now, like the transition to Apple silicon. Having said that a lot of great stuff is in stock for ipad over the coming years, especially following the transition to ARM Macs

No chance I think. Apple has generally thankfully stepped away from the idea of silly anniversary models after the TAMmy and they only briefly mentioned that iPhone turns 10 on the keynote when the X was released but marketing never tried to capitalise on the number.
