Carrier iPads now considered non-Verizon Devices?

Recently bought a new iPad Pro from Apple, swapped it with my old iPad, and Verizon is calling it a "non-Verizon" device. I've never seen this before and am wondering why it's labeling it as such. Is it because I didn't buy the iPad directly from Verizon?

I also found it interesting that you can't pick the carrier for the iPad when opting for a cellular model anymore like you used to (although you still can for the iPhones).

Anyone else seeing this for their iPads if they use it on Verizon? Just want to make sure this is expected behavior now.

I thought this meant it was a device not purchased directly from VZW. Both our iPhones (purchased direct from Apple but on Big Red's network) are called a 'non-Verizon' device.

That's because the iPad will come with an Apple SIM card if you choose the cellular model. Which means you can choose any carrier right from your iPad. You can read about that further on the Apple site.

Yeah, it's been a while since I upgraded, but I used to go back and forth between purchasing direct from Verizon or Apple and this was the first time I saw a device labeled Non Verizon.

I thought that was the case too, but I have a couple of iPhones that were purchased from eBay and they show up as Verizon devices. I think it was because they were previously used on Verizon before though.
