I've searched and I'm still unclear about jailbreaking...

I have a Cingular account (AT&T now, but the sim card is Cingular). If I buy an iPhone 1.1.2 OTB, does jailbreaking it allow me to use the iPhone with my current sim card or will it only work with the sim card inside of the iPhone already? If I can use it with any Cingular sim, should I jailbreak the iPhone using my Cingular sim to start out with? Also, will this allow other people to use their Cingula/AT&T sim cards or will only mine work? Thanks in advance.

My understanding is that even if the SIM is from at&t, but it's not an iPhone SIM, it has the same problem as any other unapproved SIM.

I see. So then it's pointless to buy a new iPhone and jailbreak it to use with my existing AT&T sim unless there's an unlock that works... thanks.

Anyone else have any input?

that's right. you have to sim unlock the phone, and because of the recent update to the bootloader on all shipping and refurbished iphones, that unlock isn't yet available.

Thanks for confirming... I guess I will just wait it out then. No need to pay $600+ for a brand new unlock iPhone right now...

One more option is to use turboSIM or a similar product. They don't unlock the iPhone or modify it in any way. They sort of combine the SIM you want to use, with the original AT&T iPhone SIM that came with the iPhone into one SIM card. It tells the iPhone that it's an iPhone SIM so the phone will activate itself, but then gives the iPhone the network instructions from your SIM, whether those instructions are for tmobile, another AT&T plan, whatever.

Actually, it does work just fine. I wondered this myself and found enough info that it appears you only need to Sim Unlock it if you want to use a different carriers SIM.

I just bought an iPhone, serial # has a 50 for the 4th and 5th digits. It came with 1.1.2 OTB (Out of The Box).

I followed the instructions here, minus the AnySIM steps:
http://www.hacktheiphone.com/112/iphone_update_112_unlock_mac.html

I took the SIM from my Cingular Blackjack (SIM says Cingular instead of AT&T) and popped it in the iPhone. Works fine. I appear to have all functionality minus visual voice mail (which I truly don't care about anyway).

And I just tested putting the wife's Cingular SIM in from her Samsung Sync and it worked fine too.

So yes, as long as you have an AT&T/Cingular SIM, you can Jailbreak your iPhone 1.1.2 OTB iPhone and use the SIM from your old phone.

Make sure you have a data package. Oh and my iPhone was never activated with iTunes. I just bought it yesterday and started jailbreaking it immediately.

So it did work? I have cingular sim as well on my phone and just got an Iphone as a christmas gift and call to see if I could add they told I need a new account for the Iphone.....So just need to call them add the data package and than follow the instruction to jailbreak and just put the cingular sim on the Iphone and it will work??????

but on the instructions says that it can't be done for the new versiob oob....
