I am sure you already did this but, double check the auto-brightness under settings is set to on. Other than that I dunno.

Had what I thought was the same problem as yourself. How to fix it is to set the brightness down to a reasonable level. Make sure that auto brightness is set to on and then go back to the home screen and press the sleep/wake button.

When you press sleep/wake again the iPhone will come on quite bright. It only adjusts the brightness when you unlock it. If you look closely once it has been unlocked it works again. Its really strange and annoying but you have to look really closely and test it in different lightings to see what is actually happening!!

Dont know if what your saying is that the screen is too dark at night or that the screen automatically goes dark when your txting! If the screen is too dark go to settings and set auto brightness to off then adjust manually, this will keep the screen at a constant brightness, now if the screen goes dark when your txting, go to settings-general and set auto-lock to however long you want, from i minute to never. my preference is never, just because i txt a lot!!!! Hope i understood your problem...

more on the autodim problem

Ok so it sounds like i need to clear things up.
the auto dim doesn't work at all. no matter what lighting im in.
its a pain because when you in the car at night and you turn on your phone its super bright and never dims unless i do it manually. i tired holding my finger over the top part of the phone near the speaker (thats where the sensor is) but still nothing. i've even restarted and restored my phone a number of times no luck! just wondering if i need to just need to restart from scratch and not do a restore at all or if this is a firmware problem

I've got the exact same problem with my phone - and like you, it's only since going to 1.1.3.

EDIT: I just though.......It's not to do with the number of home screens being used is it? I've got icons on two at the moment?
