iphone 1.1.4 installer update

i have a 1 over the installer icon telling me there's an update for it
it apears there is an update for the installer version 3.01

if i update this will it lock me out ?

im worried what to update and what not to update as i dont wann turn it into a brick

i updated it, and all was ok, wasnt sure if it was an apple related/supported programe that would of locked me out

i did google the programe but coldnt find anything
