Hi
Really sorry if this is a simple question?
But....

Can you guys help?

OK -To save me going through everything (which there is a lot of stuff and looks complicated sometimes).

I have an iPhone running 1.1.4 which has been unlocked and jailbreaked with Ziphone. I am really not bothered about installer and want to have use the newest 2.0 Firmware. What should i do, do i simply restore and use Pwnage (btw, i have never used this as Ziphone seemed an easy install process).

Should i not bother...as 2.0 is not going to offer me much else?

Or can i do it easily?

Cheers

hi there,

Using pwnage to upgrade to 2.0 is a fairly simple process. You need a few things before you attempt this:
1) the original Apple 2.0 firmware (which pwnage modifies to produce a custom 2.0 firmware which you later restore with in iTunes) You can get this here:http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-4956.20080710.V50OI/iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw
2)Boot loaders 3.9 and 4.6. Search google for these (bl39.bin and bl46.bin)

There are plenty of good tutorials on how to use pwnage tool 2.0.1 - like I say, it's pretty straight forward so don't be deterred.

Be aware that you will loose any third party apps/themes etc you have installed while using 1.1.4. The pwned firmware includes an equivalent insaller package called "Cydia". I recommend you have your original 1.1.4 firmware backed up should you wish to revert.

Personally I don't think upgrading at this early stage is worth while. 2.0 does feature some nice little additions such as the ability to take screenshots, grab images from the web as well as a scientific calculator - plus some other minor stuff.

FWIW, i also had a 1.1.4 unlocked/jailbroken ziphone and tried to upgrade to 2.0 via pwnage 2.0.1. it bricked my phone.
luckily i was able to get it replaced by apple, but pwnage definitely left a sour taste in my mouth. obviously there are plenty of people here and other places that have had success, but there are some of us that have had our phones bricked.
2.0 isn't really that great as a lot of apps i am using were already on installer. not to mention cydia doesn't have many apps on it yet. the main thing i miss is summerboard and a custom carrier icon.
either way, i'm waiting until ziphone comes out with a 2.0 jailbreak option.

Appreciate the replies - some great advice.
Thanks mrjarvie - you know I might give it a try but I am thinking knowing my luck i might join the iPhone Paperweight Club.
It sounds like 2.0 is not that revolutionary at the moment, mdwsta4 or anyone for that matter; do you think Zibri will come out with a fix for 2.0 (reading his blog it seems like he is not interested anymore)?

I don't think Zibri is coming out with anything since his first tools where based off dev-teams work and they've called him out on it so he's hands are tied with this new firmware.

If i were you i'd upgrade to Apple's original 2.0 firmware first BEFORE using pwnage tool that way Apple's firmware would've wiped any 'modifications' from Zibri's tool making things less likely to go wrong

After that just follow the pwnage tool guide posted above. Make sure you answer Yes to the question has your phone been pwned before since it hasn't.

Best of luck

I ran the tool and i have no problems even though i used Ziphone with 1.1.3 firmware but remember wipe any of zibri's modification with Apple's original 2.0 firmware BEFORE pwning. Also i wouldn't install Cydia if i were you because it reportedly drains battery life and brings the phone software to a crawl but its up to you

Best way to Pwnage a Ziphone?

Thanks all for the advice. I used Ziphone to unlock my 1st gen iphone several months ago. I'm planning to upgrade to the 2.0 firmware and use the new pwnage 2.0.1 tool to jailbreak and unlock the iphone in the near future. The below advise is very helpful.

I've been wondering if I should reinstall 1.1.4. from iTunes first, then install the new version of iTunes and install 2.0. According to the below that doen't sound necessary. Any other comment on this is appreciated.

Meanwhile, one question, Daneoni, you say:

"Make sure you answer Yes to the question has your phone been pwned before since it hasn't."

This sounds backwards. Can you elaborate?

Thanks

I haven't 2.0'd my iphone yet (waiting for 2.0.1 or 2.1 and a lot of apps i use to be upgraded) but i did install boot neuter to upgrade my bootloader back to a neutered 4.6 from the downgraded 3.9 that ziphone put on.

I think i'll wait a while yet to see how everyone gets on with the upgrade before risking my poor iPhone.

I wish I could wait too, but after working for several months just fine, the wifi connection has gone haywire, causing the phone to lock up, black out and reboot frequently. I'm not sure if this is due to Ziphone or something else; I've heard Ziphone can cause wifi problems. Anyway, I hope loading the new firmware will fix it. The only alternative is to shut the wifi down. I figure even if it's not perfect, it will have to be better than the constant crashing I'm gettng now.

Well bootneuter the phone first (bootloader 4.6). I've read a few guides which say the update is easier if you've already bootneutered the phone.

When you run pwnage in advanced mode you can deselect running bootneuter while doing the firmware upgrade.

WiFi issues seem to be common with ZiPhone cracked phones alright. Thankfully mine still works fine.

What i don't understand is that if ZiPhone can change something that makes WiFi go crazy, then why can't it be changed back? Unless it's write once memory.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I'm very new to this and have no idea how to bootneuter the phone. I have downloaded the files "BL-39.bin" and "BL-46.bin" in preparation to run the pwnage tool, but only understand how to use these files in the context of running pwnage.

Any advice/instruction is welcome and apprecated.

Unfortunately I'm very new to this and have no idea how to bootneuter the phone..

Go into installer on your phone and install bootneuter. You should be able to just search for it. It runs on the phone and will flash the bootloader for you.

You want (in the bootneuter program)

4.6
neutered
(you don't need nor really want fakeblank)

unlock: on

This way pwnage won't need to flash your phone and it's more unlocked for the upgrade to 2.0. In other words if something goes wrong it's easier to go back to 1.1.4.

Thanks.

I loaded bootneuter and ran it, but still having the problem with the wifi. I'm beginning to wonder if its a hardware issue.

I guess I'm going to have to re-install the original 1.1.4 software from Itunes, see if that works and if not take the phone into the Apple store to see if the hardeware is on the fritz.

Thanks again.
