iPhone 10s stuck in an app, won't turn off, won't launch anything

My iphone is stuck in an app and I can do certain things like swipe down and lock, but it won't turn off.
Volume buttons work.
I can't seem to reset using hold power/volume.

Any ideas?

I had this issue last week with my iPhone X. The only thing to do is let the battery die.

NVM fixed. It randomly went into black screen and allowed me to turn it off after about 10 minutes of agony.

You can always force a shutdown with volume-up, volume-down, hold power. You need to do the first two in sequence, not holding them, and then hold the power button for quite a while

Timing may have been off, but I did try that precisely.
Nothing was seemingly working for about 10 minutes.
