When I open the camera app (iOS 13.2.3) on my iPhone 11 Pro Max, and switch to portrait mode, it defaults to 2x zoom instead of 1x. This happens even after restarting the phone, or quitting the camera app. I cant figure out how to have it default to 1x mode in portrait...any advice?

Pretty certain that is by design without an option to use 1x as the default.

As I'm sure you know, taking portraits is traditionally done with telephoto lenses to reduce perspective distortion and blur the background, which is why the Portrait mode default is 2x.

You could try submitting feedback to Apple for an option to change the default.

As above. That is the way it is designed and the way it has performed since it was introduced in 2016 on the 7 Plus.

The only iPhone that does it with a single lens was/is the iPhone XR if I remember correctly.

As has been mentioned, this is by design. You can make a request to Apple for a change, but doubt there will be one. Portrait mode uses the 2x lens by design for specific reasons. They are not going to change that.

The XR is the only phone with one lens that does portrait mode. Even though the 2018 iPPs have the same basic camera system as the XR they only allow portrait mode with the selfie lens.
