Hello. New poster here.

Currently I have an iPhone 11 Pro max which I use exclusively to shoot video and some photos.

I am looking to get a second phone to allow me to do more sophisticated filming.

1.) How does the iPhone 12 Pro Max compare to the iPhone 11 Pro Max?

2.) Any complaints about the iPhone 12 Pro Max?

3.) Any idea when Apple will release the Iphone 13 Pro max - assuming there is such a thing?

4.) Any ideas on why I might want to wait for the iPhone 12 Pro Max's replacement?

Thanks for the help.

Read the iPhone 13 rumor roundup

Anyways, it'll have better cameras. Rumors indicate ProRes video. Along with a 120hz screen. Plus the usual speed improvements.

Given what you want it for. I'd certainly wait. Which should be about a little over a month from now.

Apple and my life don't seem to be on similar cycles!

I am working on a project and wanted to get a second iPhone to use with the DJI OM4 gimbal.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max sounds like a great device, but I am afarid I'll get stuck without a second iPhone until the end of October or November, and that would be a major problem.

Seems like a gamble waiting on Apple...

iPhone 13 will be available to buy by the end of September. It will be launched during the 1st half of September

So you think I could get a new iPhone 13 Pro Max in my hands - here in the US - by the first week in October at the latest?

Also, how risky is it to take the plunge with any new iPhone that hasn't been tested yet? (I know that I am not one to go rush to by the latest MacBook Pros because I want others to find all of the bugs for me!)

I have to balance getting better technology with getting out and capturing video for my business.

It does seem that the new "cinematic mode" - which will blur the background in videos interviews - would be a big leap forward for what I do, and maybe prolong my need to buy a true video camera.

But I also know that every week I wait is potentially lost footage on my current project.

Tough call... 🤔

Maybe if you have your Apple account setup. Logged in to the website. All payment info correct. Then click as quickly as possible when preorders begin.

Apple event is expected to be in the first half of September. Pre orders should open the same week with deliveries starting the next week(usually Friday). You should most likely get your hands on the new Pro Max by September end provided you order within minutes of pre- order opening time. Any delay and delivery dates can move easily into few weeks later. Some colours may be more in demand and for these, the delivery date can quickly slip.

However, certain Apple stores may have stock on launch day. You may be able to purchase one from the store.

iPhones are very reliable and I don't think there is any problem in buying one as soon as it launches.

If I can't get an iPhone 13 Pro max, or choose not to wait, is it the end of the world for what I am doing?

It's great to have the latest and greatest, but that is a race you never ultimately win, right?

I was suppsed to order my iPhone 12 Pro max last week, but got busy ordering other video gear, and I was going to order today and then I came here.

Now I'm not sure what to do...

Now I’m just a tradesman who gets a new phone every year for no real reason, but why buy an iPhone if it’s exclusively used or video or phone? There must be better options if you don’t even care that it’s a phone.

What do you mean exactly?

Currently I use an iPhone for video because it gives me mobility that a mirrorless camera or video camera would not. And the iPhone seems like the best way to go as far as mobile goes.

It sounds like the iPhone 13 Pro Max would be a big jump with the cinematic portrait mode that gives you blurred backgrounds, but I have a video project that was supposed to be completed by early to mid October, and having to wait at least a moth for the new iPhone seems like an impossible ask.

Same thing happened to me the last time I upgraded iPhones. ;-(

I took your post as you only use the phone for videos or pictures, not making calls or the other things they do.
i know the cameras are good but isn’t there much better options? My niece has a photography business and has a lot of nice cameras and never uses the iPhone thats why I asked.

Well, I am new to videography and just happened to start off on an iPhone.

One big benefit of shooting on an iPhone is mobility. I can either carry the phone with me and shoot, or at most bring along a laptop bag and tripod with all of my gear.

Of course a DSLR or mirror-less camera or a video camera offers more high-end features, but the iPhone is a great starting point for what I do.

I have been thinking, and it unfortunately probbaly makes more sense to get the iPhone 12 Pro Max and get back out in the field.

Losing 4-6 weeks of shooting just to get the cinematic video feature probably doesn't make sense. Plus, if wanting shallow depth-of-field is the goal, then a dedicated video camera will offer much more control.

It just sucks spending so much money and barely missing out on the new iPhone features.

Since you asked for more input via PM

I'm not big on video. If you can wait for the iPhone 13 to start your project. I certainly would for the video upgrades.

The I phone 12 will do more than a decent job. At least when compared to other phones.

Just be aware. With each new generation. The sensors improve and the AI processor improves. So, expect better image quality, zoom, focus, artifact reduction, low light, &c.

But when it comes to it. What matters most is how good you are as a camera operator. The other stuff is nice. But how you frame a shot is what matters.

I wouldn't spend a huge amount of time worrying about what the iPhone 13 might offer. It'll be a marginal upgrade. It's not like you're going from a 3gs to a 12 Pro Max. More likely similar to the difference of an 11 to a 12.

Very true. And in my case, what is more important is time and lost opportunity.

I need to capture things in late August and September, and I can't do that with a new iPhone in October.

If I wait for the iPhone 13 Pro Max, then I lose all of that time, and possibly all opportunities.

There is also the risk that I gamble and wait, and then something happens and I don't get my iPhone 13 Pro Max until the middle of October or later, and then I am totally f***ed.

The other thing I have been considering is that while I would love to get that cinematic feature with shallow depth of field, the reality is that if you want cinematic quality then you aren't using an iPhone. So while that will be a welcome feature slowly pushing iPhones closer to mirrorless cameras and digital video cameras, the reality is that nothing can compete with true manual, glass camera lens.

That being said, unless someone else has a compelling reason that I need to wait, I think I need to order my iPhone 12 Pro max before bedtime tonight so I will have t next week and can get back out into the field shooting before Summer ends!!

Well then time is making your decision. If you're missing shots. You're missing shots. It doesn't matter how great the iPhone 13 is. You won't get them back.

If this is for a business. You get the best tool you can. Which means whatever is the best available when you need it.

If in five months. You think you need the 13. As in you'll do better and make more money. Then upgrade then and take the hit. As it'll be worth the business expense.

While it's a bit cliche. I think the saying. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Is an apt saying.

Well said.

Good way of looking at things.

Yeah, I think I needed confirmation for "an independent 3rd-party"! ;-)

It sucks to miss out again on Apple's latest offering - and just a few weeks before things come out - but I am already behind schedule and I need to get back out on the road and capture what little is left of Summer 2021.

Thanks for putting things into perspective, and helping me to make a pragmatic decision for my business.

Excellent advice, and simply put!! 👍👍
