As we’ve seen with the rumours, the 12 will gain a smaller size at 5.4 inches and the existing 6.1 and the 12 Pro moves to 6.1 inches, but what I haven’t seen discussed is what resolution these displays will be. If the 12 moves to OLED too, we can only assume (If I understand correctly) the resolution will have to increase to mitigate the effect of the PenTile display, so what resolution would that feasibly become - perhaps the same as the Max variants to ease the transition for apps? We could also assume this new resolution would be the same for the 6.1 Pro, potentially separated by ProMotion refresh rate. Same principle goes for the rumoured 5.4 inch iPhone 12, are we looking at a whole host of new resolutions for developers to support in their apps?

I think a brand new set of resolutions is a given because of the new form factors. To guesstimate resolution, we would have to agree on the ppi first.

The iPhone 5G Pro family should increase to about 489 PPI PenTile (326 ppi actual). This is because the current 458 PPI on the 11 Pro is realistically closer to 305 PPI once we consider the actual subpixels. On Android, we're seeing about over 500 ppi so this should be realistic for Apple.

For iPhone 5G, I would expect the display to have around 330 PPI PenTile and let marketing and software make up for it. Basically, use the lowest resolution possible before pixelation is seen.
