Hi

Does anyone know what the copper disk on the inside here is?
I broke the screen and the back some weeks ago.
I wonder if this is something vital or is it just the magsafe?

My plan is to just buy a new screen and have a case on the backside. But dont need to buy the screen if the phone is broke =)
Do you think this will work or have i broke the phone? o_O

Kind regards
Christoffer

Ouch and ouch. I strongly suggest asking an expert. I think this may be magsafe and the phone is done but better be sure...

That's just the magsafe, but woooo...I think I'd just get a replacement phone rather than replace the screen on that one.
Haha :p yea but is the phone broken if I dented the magsafe?

Probably not if the damage is limited to the magsafe coil, but it's hard to know what else might be damaged too - that's why I think it's probably safer to just get a refurbished phone rather than spend money on a screen for this one.
True :(
thanks :)

I agree with the others that the iPhone is totaled.

Interesting to see inside. Not unlike when one checks that their seatbelt is secure after passing a nasty car crash, I just made sure my silicone iPhone case is in good shape.

That should be the induction charger coil. I don't think it should affect the phone per se, but your phone is prone to get moist inside.

I think the cost of changing the screen will be pretty close to buying a preowned phone, like 13 mini. Moreover if you plan to replace it with an original screen, which is very recommended as 3rd party can be quite poor quality and won't last. Also, this is an old phone that might require a battery change very soon - or is already due.

TLDR is better to get new phone with a new batterry. :)

The copper piece is the wireless charging coil. I believe you are seeing the Magsafe magnets on the outer perimeter of the coil, too.

My brother's phone looks like this too and he still uses it. All his phones seem to end up looking this way. But that phone is not water resistant anymore, so take care.

Apple won’t replace the screen while leaving the back glass unaddressed. Unfortunately your iPhone back glass isn’t repairable by Apple, as they started offering back glass replacement on iPhone 14. The broken back glass alone escalates the “repair” to a whole unit replacement, which is generally half or more of the phone’s original retail cost.

As others have said, you’re better off buying a new device. Unless you want to stick with 12 mini and you find Apple’s replacement cost suitable. Maybe you can find a 13 mini for similar cost and reap the benefits of better battery than 12 mini offers.

What does Apple “not know” before receiving the device for repair? They don’t know what the copper disc is? They don’t know the cost to repair? (They may not want to quote you before seeing the device but they’re either gonna replace the front and back or replace the whole device and you can find costs for those scenarios). Just curious what you’re saying Apple doesn’t know about the situation. Sorry that this happened to your phone!

That is the charging coil for wireless charging. Really not a big deal. I worked at a phone repair store for a while and people had phones worse than this that they used with a case on the back. I would personally avoid wireless charging but honestly it probably still works.

I don't think Apple or any third-party can repair this kind of damage on an iPhone 12 mini. Especially if the display is also shattered.

I'm actually pretty sure they'll refuse to do it.

And if they could do it, the total cost, if you're not covered by insurance, would exceed far beyond what a new 12 mini would cost.

You're much better off buying a completely new iPhone.

Personally, I'd go for a 13 or 13 mini if you opt for a refurbished/used model.

I guess the biggest problem is if a fleck of glass worked its way into the device and punctured the battery? But yeah I think the back glass on an iPhone 12 requires a full shell replacement - i.e. removing all the internal components and putting them in a new body. That and the smashed front glass may cost you more than the phone is worth. Was it iPhone 14 that finally allowed removing the back glass separately to the mid-frame?

It is a pretty easy repair. You just have to get a new housing. I have replaced a number of them. Is it economically worth it? Probably not, but plenty of repair shops could do it.

Yeah removing just the back glass started with the 14. There are some higher end repair shops that have this laser etching machine that can actually replace the back glass on 12 and 13 models though.

Yea, that disk is for MagSafe. Do not try to charge it wirelessly again ;) As far as it working or not? No idea, from the looks it could be fine, but what damage can't we see? Can you power it on? If you do, can you check your router to see if it connects to your wifi? You really should take it to a shop to get it properly looked at and hopefully fixed.
