Given the Western superstitions around the number 13 and Asian superstitions around the number 14 - - will next year be the year Apple changes it's naming convention to avoid the sales hex?

...or will they just let it go, and before long we'll be up to the iPhone 26?

I think they will retire the whole number thingy.
They are going to do just like they do with the iPads.

iPhone Mini
iPhone
iPhone Pro
iPhone Pro Max
All Will Be Latest Models
Just like the Macs as well. Only the release year will be the reference.
There's nothing really more significant left to add except higher refresh rate and no notch and the usual camera..processor upgrades.

Didn’t even think of this naming scheme, it fits perfect for Apple

I was wondering the same as OP too, since superstition has some crazy influence(ahem 808.8gb WD drive that was made purely around that, have a few of them).

I too have been wondering about iPhone numbering. In my street there are numbers 11, 12, 12a, 14, 15.... But I can’t imagine Apple would abandon iPhone numbers because there seems to be a good number of people who MUST have the latest model number, it’s a useful sales trigger.

Well...I recently bought an iPhone 12 coming from a 11pro in excellent shape only to keep it 2 years to avoid the 13.
Didn´t know the asien "tetraphobia". Just read the wiki about it and they are really concerned about the numer 4. :O

Going with iPhone 12S would get them through the first "unlucky" year.

Apple need to change the naming convention of their iPhones as it’s getting ridiculous now. Samsung got the right idea with with s20 starting in 2020 etc. Just call it ‘iPhone‘ and ‘iPhone pro’ 2022 edition or something like that.

Until they actually put the name of the iPhone on the phone itself, or even the box, I couldn't care less what name Apple gives it. Even then, I wouldn't care. Do people actually care about this? If Apple gave it some god-awful name that you totally despised would that keep you from owning it. It's just a name to differentiate it from other models. This discussion comes up all the time and I don't understand the concern with the naming of a phone.

They'll start using names. So:
  • 13 will be the iPhone Jobs
  • 14 will be the iPhone Jony
  • 15 will be the iPhone Cook

I like this idea... I noticed the new iPad Air is just that and they stopped number that after the iPad Air 2. I think the only two product lines that have numbered releases are the Watch and the iPhone.

iPhone Series 13 Pro Max, anyone? LOL

Apple didn’t shy away from the number 4, which is a huge no no in many Asian culture. Yet Apple did a 4 and 4s, and no issues whatsoever. We also had ios versioning with iOS 4, iOS 13, 14, no problems. I don’t think people are still that superstitious on tech or gadgets. They might be when it relates to their houses/apartments/cars, but I don’t see people having issues with numbers on gadgets.

Xiaomi, a Chinese company, had no issues making a Mi 4 and Redmi 4 in the past.

That would make sense, and it would streamline the naming of all Apple products. However, I don’t think Apple would do it. The iPhone is such the bulk of their money making machine that they do need a super obvious indicator of a newer version. Putting a number on the name is the easiest for the lay consumers to understand. Also, unlike Macs where Apple tend to discontinue the previous lineup and replaced it altogether with a refreshed lineup, Apple keeps the older iPhones for sale. So it’s better to keep the numbering scheme. The lay consumers will know (and they care) that they are buying an iPhone 12, which is better than the iPhone 11.

Ah yes I forgot about them keeping old products around (same with the Watch). That alone will be motivation to keep some kind of changing designation for both product lines.
