It would have made sense if they re-introduced Touch ID using COVID as an excuse, however now they have managed to make Face ID work with the mask..
Secondly, as someone else said, apple implements one feature at a time so I find it hard to believe that they will include 120hz (the most likely feature) and a Touch ID together, what do you think?

Mine absolutely does not work with a mask..
I think he's talking about the work around where you can use your Apple watch to unlock your phone. Obviously, that isn't the same as making face ID work.

On a side note, how is it that we can recognize people in public that we haven't seen in awhile, even with a mask on, yet my phone that sees my face EVERY day and still can't recognize me? So much for machine 'learning.'

Im concerned for security with the unlocking with Apple watch.

If I'm in the office, someone picks up my phone and can unlock it before running off with it.......
Yes, unlikely, but its still a possibility.

I know the watch would vibrate upon unlocking, as it does when I unlock my MacBook, but in another scenario, a pickpocket could take my phone, unlock it, and then run off!

Or am I understanding this incorrectly?? Maybe the handset needs to be held in your 'watch hand' - so very close proximity?

I really do hope in-screen Touch ID comes back with the iPhone 13. As much as I am a fan of FaceID since its always worked flawlessly for me, I would prefer unlocking via TouchID then with my watch.....

Even without a mask, faceId never worked as flawlessly as TouchID did. I can't count the number of times I had to enter my passcode when I was using a FaceID device. Now that I'm back on a 2016 SE, I can count (and have been) the number of times that I've had to use a passcode. Aside from when my fingers are wet, it's been less than 10 times in 3 months. I was averaging 10 times a day with FaceId.

You‘ll get a button on your watch to re-lock the phone so this shouldn‘t be a problem unless the thief runs very fast outside the bluetooth range until you react.

One of my reasons to doubt the return of touch id this year.

If someone were to run off with the phone, the owner could just login into iCloud.com and set the phone as lost. That would essentially make the phone unusable.

No point in being snippy about it either. 14.5 is BETA and not everyone is interested in it yet.

not sure why you induced that I am being snippy. If we go with your thinking then its you who is being snippy and whining about the feature which is only available in 14.5 and is in beta. So may be stop complaining. Have a good day!

I think you have to unlock it with a combination of FaceID (while wearing a mask) and your AW being within range and unlocked. So a thief can't just grab your phone from near you and have your watch unlock it as they run off.

Not everybody has an AppleWatch
And even if you have one it doesn’t mean that you’re wearing it
Underscreen Touch ID is the real solution and it’s out there so it’s not like Apple has to develop something totally new
This watch unlock is a temporary fix for 8 months till the next iPhone comes out

They added very little side from camera for the 12 no reason why 120hz and Touch ID don’t both arrive

Don’t forget 120hz is pros only

Machine Learning = Applications that learn from experience. We haven’t got that.

Kidology = The art or practice of bluffing or deception. We’ve got that, plenty of it.

Almost certainly. No doubt the feature set of the 12 were signed off way before Covid became a thing.

By the summer/fall of 2020, Apple will have known that mask wearing in shops and public transport will be common in many countries for years to come, because of Covid.

‘Worse case’, they can implement an already working modern solution for Touch ID on the pill wake/sleep button - in exactly the same way as the iPad air (I’d be good with this as you tend to hold your thumb near or on that button when you unlock your phone when holding it one handed).

If they can get under screen Touch ID working then that will be good too. Except that unlocking your phone whilst holding it will likely become a two hand process. Hmm.

Most likely implementation of Touch ID in 13 models will be power button like the iPad. That should be a one handed maneuver even on Max models.
