I believe that this must be a software issue but I have already done a clean install of the IOS and re-installed my data from an external hard drive . I've also been to the apple genius bar where they replaced my camera but the issue still persists.
When taking photos in Portrait mode the photos process overexposed.. sometimes, both inside and outside, even if I touch the screen before taking the photo to focus on the object.
example below I took 10 photos of this puppy for the shelter and 7 were overexposed, the other 3 were perfect
Apple does not have any other "fixes" for me
Iphone 13 Pro iOS 16.4.1
any suggestions?

I have exact same issue with my phone which is 13 Pro with latest software. I take pictures at the same spot regularly and I realized that new pictures started to be over exposed even though I took them with same angle and same time of the day. This is extremely annoying.

Playing with exposure settings make it little bearable but it is not as clear as it used to be. I hope this is a honest mistake instead of a planned obsolescence.

Exactly the same Portrait mode issue here - Apple has been excellent about spending hours on the phone with me (I'm really impressed by their customer care), but so far no resolution.

I had days with escalated cs and went into the store 2x. First they replaced the camera which resulted in zero change. Reformatted the phone again. today went to the genius bar again and they wanted to replace the logic board, that’s when I put my hand up and asked to speak to a manager about just replacing the phone… which they did. Yeesh going to the genius bar is not what it used to be. It used to be so easy to get a replacement without having to reformat the device multiple times when they couldn’t figure out how to remedy the issue. I showed them multiple photos and the tech agreed that the photos were color over processed and over exposed

BTW that puppy was quickly adopted, he didn’t need me to take his photo for the website

Until recently I was able to take portraits of family and friends that were almost perfectly exposed out of the camera - editing not required. I'm quite convinced that the new ios has messed things up regarding exposure.

Update: Today, Apple advised that this Portrait mode issue is being worked upon by their engineers, and that there will be a software fix coming.

Are these comments all involving "portrait mode" only?
sorry for the late reply, yes, only experiencing in portrait mode but it doesn't happen all the time. I didn't have an issue for a few weeks and yesterday it happened again. I even turned the phone off and on etc

May 23: still happens; I’ve heard nothing more from Apple. I’m terribly disappointed.

is the plan to have a fix in my lifetime? I'm so annoyed and willing to move away from apple since I use my phone's camera so often. issue is happening all the time now. Whenever I've spoken to an Apple support person I just get :this is the first time someone has mentioned this"

I communicated again with Apple support last week but they’ve not responded! Previously they told me that their engineers were aware of the problem and were working on a fix! Apparently they’ve had problems resolving the issue, or it just isn’t a high priority for them.

I'm bumping this. I have the same issue. In past it was just sometimes like that. Now every 3x portrait is blown out overexposed. It works fine in 1x portrait, and 3x without portait mode.
What the hell is this and why Apple is not responding? Many others reporting the same issue on reddit.

I've noticed the overexposure issue in Portrait Mode on my iPhone 13 Pro as well. One workaround I've found helpful is to manually adjust the exposure before taking the shot. Tapping on the brightest part of the screen and then using the exposure slider that appears next to the yellow focus box can give you a bit more control. Funny enough, I was trying to take some passport photos and kept running into this overexposure problem. It got me diving into specific photo requirements for documents. During my search, I stumbled upon https://photogov.com/documents-requirements/, which provides detailed image requirements for various official documents from different countries. It was quite insightful, especially to understand the standards.

No, that was not working when it did this. The photo would still end up washed out. But the latest update has fixed this for me. Not an issue anymore.
