Hi, everyone!

I noticed something with my new iPhone 13 Pro. When I take a shot, I notice that the resulting image is different from how the scene looked like in the viewfinder in the Camera app.

This typically happens with sunset shots. I’m usually happy with what I see in the viewfinder, and then when I take a shot, the scene gets significantly darker.

Is this a Smart HDR thing? Sadly, the iPhone 13 Pro lacks the option to turn off Smart HDR…

That’s just how it is. There’s a ton of “computational photography” going on after the shutter is tripped to process the image according to Apple’s whims. The viewfinder (viewing screen) is just a framing viewfinder- not an accurate representation as to how the photo will eventually turn out.

I had a feeling that was the case, but it seems like the difference is more drastic now than it was before.

Different as in image quality or distant? First thing I noticed was how far my subject was on the iPhone display / view finder compared to what I was used to seeing.

More of the former (image quality), but then there have been times when the resulting image doesn’t have the same proportions as what I saw in the viewfinder.

For example, I took a shot of a store. In the viewfinder, the signage was inside the shot. But in the resulting image, part of the signage was cropped out. Turning off “View outside frame” and doing a restart may have fixed this for me, though.

Thanks for the clarification.
