Just got iPhone 13 Pro to replace my iPhone 12 Amateur.

I was excited about the ultra-wide angle lens.

But comparing the phones in Camera app, iPhone 12 offers .5x and 1x, and iPhone 13 Pro offers .5x, 1x, and 3x. And both capture the same width at .5x.

So how do I access the ultra-wide angle lens? Or how am I misunderstanding?

0.5x is the ultra wide. I’m not sure what you mean with “same width”? In the camera app itself maybe? The actual image is clearly wider.

Like @Strelok said, the .5 is the ultra-wide lens, which is the same focal length as the ultra wide lens in the iPhone 12, so they will both have the same ‘width’. However, even though they have the same focal length, the camera in the 13 pro is a much higher quality camera that lets in more light and has a larger sensor, so it will take much better pictures than the 12, especially in low light situations.

The new camera on the 13 Pro that you didn’t have on the 12 is the 3x zoom. The 12 can only optically zoom to 1x, but the 13 pro max can optically zoom to 3x.

The actual image is clearly wider.

Strelok: No, they are exactly the same width. Attached are shots from (left) iPhone 12 (not pro) and (right) iPhone 13 Pro using .5 lens (colors are different because I've followed Austin Mann's advice and set iPhone 13's photography style to -30 Tone and +15 Warmth).

BrettDS: I don't understand how you can be agreeing with Strelok while saying the opposite thing. But clearly your point is correct, and my error was believing my iPhone 12 non-pro lacked an ultra-wide lens.

The iPhone 12 has an ultra wide and wide angle lens, the 13 Pro has an ultra wide, wide angle and telephoto lens. The ultra wide on the 13 Pro is not going to be wider than the ultra wide on the 12.

ilInthought you were saying the wide angle (1x) and ultra wide (0.5x) are the same width, which is why I was a bit confused.

Ok, got it, thanks.

Just for kicks, I removed my customized photography style settings and took another shot (with 13 Pro), and like the default a lot better than either of the above.
