According to Macrumors the new iPhone 14 (Pro and normal) will be more like an iPhone "13 S".

Did Apple make changes in the upgrade schedule?

A new generation always had a new design.

After the X came the XS. - So far so normal.

Then came iPhone 11 and 12.
So 12 should be the "11 S", but the 11 kept the design of the X and XS and the iPhone 12 had a new design.

So technically the X / XS / 11 are from one generation.

And the 12 / 13 / 14 will be from one generation if the 14 will keep the same design.

So I guess one generation includes now 3 phones instead of 2.

Any opinions on that?

If you wonder why I think this is important:

Usually the "S" generations get longer support. I.e. the 6 vs the 6S. The 6S was released on year after the 6, so you would expect it to also get updates for one more year after the iPhone 6.
But while the iPhone 6 stopped getting updates after iOS 12, the iPhone 6S is running iOS 15 (and not just 13).

It's the same thing they did with the iPhone 6 design over the years:
iPhone 6
iPhone 6s
iPhone 7
iPhone 8/X

As you can see there is a new design after 3 years but you must upgrade to the premium model to receive it. The 14 series is a repeat of that. Then next year it will trickle down to the other models like the XR did.

Regarding S models, it's pretty confusing post 6s since Apple has switched up the naming/releases. The 11 (Pro) is pretty much the 3rd revision of the X, but will it be supported any longer than the XS? It's hard to tell. Apple had no issue dropping the 7 despite it being "better" than the 6s.

I don’t see how iPhone 14 Pro is iPhone 13S. It’s a major form factor change with the pill and hole and 48MP sensor.

For iPhone 14, Apple had two choices, raise the price and equip A16 in all models, or keep the same price and and use A15.

Where do you see the major form factor change? The outside design/shell is supposed to be the same.

Of course the article and me are referring to the iPhone 14 Pro being the iPhone 13S Pro.

There's no major form factor change. The iPhone 14 pro is to the iPhone 12 pro as the iPhone 8 was to the iPhone 6.

Notch to pill is not a redesign.

Apple’s naming scheme has changed since the 6S as they’ve been much more keen on recycling their designs. Up until the 6S, Apple carried out full redesigns every 2 years. Now they can hold onto one design for 3-4 years.

The X/XS/11 along with the cheaper XR are all part of the same family. This is also true with the 6/6S/7/8/SE2/SE3 designs. The 12/13 and 14 are all based off of the same model as there are no major changes between them. Replacing the notch with a pill + punch hole is similar to the 7’s aluminium rear casing being replaced with the 8’s glass back.

The SE/SE2 and SE3 still belong to the family trees they derived from but are examples of older designs Apple went back to due to them wanting to participate in the mid-ranged phone market.

The camera island is about 25% larger. The notch has represented iPhone since 2017. Given Apple is conservative with designs and all manufacturers have settled on 6.7-inch, these are big changes. The next step would folding display, but that's years out.

In the case of the Pro, it’s clearly more than an S upgrade. In the case of the standard, it’s not even an S upgrade

It’s hardly a major form factor change. The notch turning into a pill + cutout is hardly any different than what we have now. I’d argue that the 12’s return to a boxier phone was more of a major form factor change.
