Currently, I'm an iPhone XR user, which is a 3.3 year old device right now. There are 3 iPhone generations (and like 10+ individual iPhones) that would be an upgrade: 11, 12 and 13. However, looking at the latest 13, apart from cameras, I see nothing it can offer me I don't already have. Sure, you may say smaller notch, MagSafe, better CPU but I don't notice/care about those in day to day life.
As for iPhone 14 or the rumors I see on this site, it's a snooze fest. The notch never really bothered me, so if it's gone, it's gone. I'm not buying a new phone for that. The camera bump is gone? I never had one since I always use a case and it at least gave iPhones some character. If the currently shown render is to be the final design, it's going to be an extremely bland phone on the outside.
That brings me to the inside.
- iOS 13 brought dark mode. That was huge.
- iOS 14 brought widgets. That was... better late than never.
- iOS 15 brought... I don't even know what. Yesterday I updated to 15.2 and I have no clue what changed between 15.0 to 15.1 or between 15.1 and 15.2.
With Apple focused on Macs transitioning to Apple Silicon and revamping their Mac lineup, I feel like the iPhone and sadly iPad as well (looking at you, iPadOS 15) are being pushed to the side.
Then I look over to the other side of my lovely walled garden, which let's be fair, has nothing particularly wrong with it and I see all the fun stuff. The Android 12 redesign with customizable (to an extent) color schemes. I see the Pixel 6 with the unique camera bump no one else has (and it looks awesome IMO). I see all the Samsung discounts for S20's and S21's (which for an owner/seller sucks immensely but is quite exciting for a buyer) and it really excites me. Unlike the iPhone 12 and 13, where the only redeeming feature are the flat sides, which really appeal to me visually.
I'm still aware of all the issues with Android, such as late updates, devs prioritizing iOS, irremovable bloatware (a certain book of faces says hi), but I'm not gonna lie, I'm kinda tempted to spend some time there, until iPhone/iOS is fun again.
End of rant.
