Currently, I'm an iPhone XR user, which is a 3.3 year old device right now. There are 3 iPhone generations (and like 10+ individual iPhones) that would be an upgrade: 11, 12 and 13. However, looking at the latest 13, apart from cameras, I see nothing it can offer me I don't already have. Sure, you may say smaller notch, MagSafe, better CPU but I don't notice/care about those in day to day life.

As for iPhone 14 or the rumors I see on this site, it's a snooze fest. The notch never really bothered me, so if it's gone, it's gone. I'm not buying a new phone for that. The camera bump is gone? I never had one since I always use a case and it at least gave iPhones some character. If the currently shown render is to be the final design, it's going to be an extremely bland phone on the outside.

That brings me to the inside.

- iOS 13 brought dark mode. That was huge.
- iOS 14 brought widgets. That was... better late than never.
- iOS 15 brought... I don't even know what. Yesterday I updated to 15.2 and I have no clue what changed between 15.0 to 15.1 or between 15.1 and 15.2.

With Apple focused on Macs transitioning to Apple Silicon and revamping their Mac lineup, I feel like the iPhone and sadly iPad as well (looking at you, iPadOS 15) are being pushed to the side.

Then I look over to the other side of my lovely walled garden, which let's be fair, has nothing particularly wrong with it and I see all the fun stuff. The Android 12 redesign with customizable (to an extent) color schemes. I see the Pixel 6 with the unique camera bump no one else has (and it looks awesome IMO). I see all the Samsung discounts for S20's and S21's (which for an owner/seller sucks immensely but is quite exciting for a buyer) and it really excites me. Unlike the iPhone 12 and 13, where the only redeeming feature are the flat sides, which really appeal to me visually.

I'm still aware of all the issues with Android, such as late updates, devs prioritizing iOS, irremovable bloatware (a certain book of faces says hi), but I'm not gonna lie, I'm kinda tempted to spend some time there, until iPhone/iOS is fun again.

End of rant.

Apl is going to make a new iPhone model every year for eternity. It’s up to each person to decide when they need a new one. A good rule to follow is get a new iPhone when the one you have is way too aggravating to use (or 6 to 7 years old).

The grass is often greener on the other side. If colour schemes or camera bumps are reasons enough to entice you over, why not try an Android device and see how much you like it.

XR is an awesome phone but come on XR to 12 is a big upgrade, which is what I did last year. There’s 4 or 5 big new features along with the usual

On the face of it, 12 to 13 is not a massive upgrade but I upgraded anyway. 13 feels like a really nice upgrade from the 12, it’s hard to describe but everything feels so much more refined and just better. 12 to 13 upgrade is definitely worth it

Get a 13 pro and enjoy the high refresh screen, the big battery bump and a great camera upgrade. Feel free to jump ship to android, I prefer stable upgrades that are meaningful compared to flashy ones that are mostly gimmicks and glitch out.

The screen on the 13 Pros is unbelievable. That and the battery life have been real quality of life upgrades for me from my XS.

As for Apple focusing on the Macs - it’s about damn time! They made some real mistakes on that front for years and didn’t make any real progress. Their focus was on the iPhone/iPad for well over a decade.

That’s nice and all but at the end of the day if the iphone 14 is another minor upgrade it will still sell millions . There’s no stopping the apple train

If a notch less iPhone doesn’t excite you nothing will. It’s always a chip upgrade & a camera upgrade
