Hey all, looking at getting my Dad a new phone for his upcoming birthday. He isn't so fussed on the tech specs but is coming from an 8 Plus so the bigger screen is the main thing for him. My dilemma is, do I get the iPhone 14 Plus for him at £949 or a refurb 12 Pro Max at £779.

His main uses are all day use, some light video content, some light photography.

He tends to keep the phone around 5 years so ideally would like something that's going to be supported the length of time which is my main concern with a 12 Pro Max with the one year older chip.

What would everyone recommend?

Thanks

I would say iPhone 14 Plus for all the reasons you gave. Since your dad keeps his phone at least 5 years you will get at minimum 5 years of support from Apple. Also the iPhone 14 and Plus models are easier to replace the battery as the back cover is removed. Battery should be bigger and better and you have the A15.

Both awesome but I would personally go for the 14 Plus. I reckon the 12 will easily be supported for a further 5 years so there are no concerns either way and there is no wrong answer.

Beware of the 12’s battery though which is noticeably lower quality than the 13 or 14’s. I have a 12 Mini and I have never seen a battery degrade as quickly in my life.

This is one of the only instances where the regular 14 is better. If you were considering a 13 instead of a 13, I’d say go for that, but the 14 is a significantly newer phone than the 12 and will probably be supported an extra couple years.

14 plus; the 12 pros weren’t that impressive over the regular 12 at the time unless you desperately needed the telephoto. If this was the 13 pro max vs 14 plus it would be a different story.

12 pro max will last for years to come but in this case I’d say 14 plus.

I agree with the majority

Get the 14 Plus with the added features like crash protection for your loving Dad and your peace of mind

On my 12PM the battery was great on 15.6.1 THEN I updated to 16.1 and now it's horrible. Been a week and its still bad. Hard resets and such didn't work. So good thing I got my 14PM and so far so good.

If I had to choose I would go with the refurb 12pm

If you aren’t tied into a carrier Visible has the 13Pro Max in 512GB of storage for $896, the lower storage options have sold out, they had the 128GB for $676. They have it available in Silver, Graphite and Gold. I would go this route over 14 Plus
