So after my carrier bungled my launch-day 14 Pro Max order, I ordered directly from Apple and finally got the iPhone yesterday. In the first full day of use, a few things have taken me by surprise.
1. AoD is far more useful than I thought it would be. I wasn't planning on enabling AoD, mainly because it's not something I've ever felt like I needed, and also to save battery. However, I left it enabled by mistake, and discovered that the iPhone now makes a fantastic desk clock when it's on my MagSafe charging stand. I don't actually have a clock in my bedroom (besides the one on my Mac, or the Apple Watch, both of which require some sort of interaction to display the time when idle) so I found it really convenient to have the time displayed prominently on the iPhone. Go figure. lol
2. AoD is smart! I'm not sure if everyone knows this, but the AoD will turn off if you're wearing your Apple Watch and leave the vicinity of the phone. I think I remember that being mentioned during the keynote or in a review, but still - kind of a cool feature.
3. The name "Dynamic Island" is very appropriate! Besides the nifty animations with Apple Pay, express transit card, and so on, I noticed something really cool today. You know the little 'now playing' EQ animation that the music app displays to the left of whatever song is currently playing? Sort of a bouncy little non-functional EQ graphic that loops? In the Dynamic Island, it's an actual, functional EQ. 😳 It displays functional EQ visualizations for the music app and the phone app, at least (those are the two apps that I noticed it with). I thought that was pretty cool!
4. Deep Purple is an awesome color. After years of white iPhones (iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, 5S, 6 Plus, 6S Plus, 7 Plus, 11 Pro Max) and then black (X, 12 Pro Max) I decided to go with something different this year - Deep Purple. It's gorgeous! Subtle enough to not stand out too much indoors (great for my job!) but vivid and colorful outdoors. Absolutely perfect!
Has anyone else had any cool little surprises with their new phones?
