I have been trying to chase down this issue for a while now. I originally thought that it was a problem switching from wifi to cellular and at one time it might have been, but I have removed wifi from the equation by testing with the wifi off.

So, I am on T-Mobile. When I drive to a certain area about a mile down the road from me, I am unable to browse anywhere, send messages, or call. Even though my phone shows full bars and a 5GUC connection, it is like it is not connected at all. Sometimes when I switch cellular off and on again, I will be able to use the phone and sometimes doing this achieves nothing. Today I tried switching the phone to LTE and I was able to connect fine. Switching cellular off and on while on 5G did absolutely nothing.

Last night I talked to Apple support. They ran remote tests on my phone and found nothing wrong with it. Their theory is that it is a problem with T-Mobile assigning towers to my phone. I always thought that the tower chosen was something done by the phone. The technician I talked to also said that there is an upcoming update that might help. His final suggestion was to contact T-Mobile and discuss it with them.

So I called T-Mobile to discuss it with them. They said that the area I lose my connection in has three 5G towers around it and perhaps there is an issue with the phone switching towers. They wanted to blame it on the phone. They said that there were no reports of issues in this area.

So, Apple wants to blame it on T-Mobile. T-Mobile wants to blame it on Apple. That actually went exactly as I thought it would. All companies prefer to put the blame on someone else and unfortunately, that leaves me no closer to a real answer about why this is happening. The thing is, when it is working, T-Mobile is amazing around here. I routinely get download speeds that are close to 1Gb. But that is worthless if I can’t even connect. I have someone in my family that has a Fold 4. I am going to take it to the same area and see how it handles connecting. I suspect that it will have no issues. My old Note 20 never had problems.

So I am hoping someone on here understands how all of this works and can give me an idea of what to do next. Other than this issue, the phone has been nothing short of amazing.

Today I determined that the phone is not the problem. I took a family member’s Fold 4 with me, along with my phone. Neither phone could connect in the location that I’ve been having problems with. When I switched them over to LTE, they both connected with no problem. I’m going to leave my phone on LTE. LTE around here is pretty fast and seems to have less latency. Probably because everyone who can be on 5G is on 5G.
