I'm trying to apply for an Australia ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) using their iPhone app. It wants to scan the NFC on my US Passport. But, I can't find how to enable NFC scanning on my iPhone 14 Pro. It is not in the Control Center and not listed in the controls I can add to the Control Center.

So, how do I enable NFC scanning?

When you're at that step in the app, what if you just held it over your passport? NFC scanning might be always-on.

I tried several times. It just fails every time. I even watched their video on how to do it. I wonder if iPhones sold in Thailand don't have an NFC scanner or have it disabled for some reason.

Edit: I just checked my daughter's iPhone 13. It doesn't have NFC either.

Damn, then I’m not sure, sorry. I googled and some suggestions were to reboot, or disable cellular, or hold it at the top edge by the camera perhaps almost vertically (70-90 deg) rather than horizontally.

For all passports (except USA), place the phone on top of your passport's front cover.

For USA passports, open the passport and place the mobile device on the passport personal data page (not on the cover).
Just checking that you’re placing your phone on the personal data page.

Yes I was. It never worked. I even tried holding the phone vertically and moving it around the personal data page.

But, guess what. Suddenly, the app seemed to give up on the NFC scan and moved on to having me verify the passport data.

And, within ten minutes I had my Electronic Travel Authority. I'm good to go.
