also on a 14pm, here are my thoughts:
battery: i’ve had a couple applecare replacements of my device (purchased at launch), so i’m sitting at 86% battery capacity right now. i do find myself hunting for a charger more often now, so more battery would be nice. an aside: it’s a shame apple didn’t allow the “80% max” charge setting to be enabled on this generation device.
regarding the camera: i use the tele lens a lot, and it often downgrades to the cropped main camera in low light, like concerts. however, in landscape/well lit situations, it performs great. once the tele lens is able to be used in lower light, that would be a big upgrade to me. the wide lens is also useful for landscape shots, and the exclusion of those two lenses on the air were what dissuaded me from going with that. it looks like a gorgeous device, otherwise.
performance: i don’t foresee myself upgrading to ios 26. i find screenshots of the new os give me a headache, and the home screen honestly looks like some cheap jailbreak theme i’d install ten years ago. it doesn’t look premium at all, to my eyes. additionally, everything i need (web browsing, messaging, content consumption) works fine. the new features don’t hold any appeal, and i’ve turned off all the “AI” features on my AI-capable macs.
on usb-c: i have a plethora of lightning cables, but i preferentially charge wirelessly, like at home and in my daily driver. the only time this phone ever really sees a lightning cable is in a road trip or in my weekend car, neither of which are regular enough occurrences to necessitate an upgrade for the port.
overall, the i purchased the 14 pro (upgraded from an X) because it marked a new step in the design language with the dynamic island (which i use for music/maps multiple times a day!). the stainless steel looks exceptional, even with everything moving to brushed metal again. i think a battery replacement will get this device feeling solid again, and that’s way cheaper than a new phone!
the air *almost* provides a logical upgrade path, but there aren’t really major changes beyond the form—the X, for instance, brought new screen tech (OLED) and new security (FaceID) to iphone, in addition to the design change. it even had a better camera system (OIS on both lenses) than the 8, to boot. maybe the 18 (or whenever the folding phone comes out) will be the next step for me
